When to change....
« on: January 12, 2005, 04:50:35 AM »
Ball weight !

I know...we've talked about the advantages, disadvantages, and others on this subject....but.....

I currently throw 16# equipment, and have no problem w/ my arm, wrist, etc...I also maintain a speed of about 15-16 at the pin-deck. I see no reason to drop at this point, plus...I'm afraid I'll have an issue w/ ball speed at right now.

Question is this: At what point should I consider the drop to 15..if at all?

Any and all comments welcome...thanks

Do it when you feel like you want your average to go up a few sticks!  Best decision I ever made, bowling wise, was dropping down to a 15 lb. ball.  My average went through the roof and I was shooting more consistent.  Just my opinion.

When it hurts..... Here's my thoughts and a few other good bowlers that I talk with. 16s are fine if you can handle weight and are comfortable. 16s are better for bowlers with slower/medium ball speeds and/or a straighter trajectory,..less deflection. 15s are best for bowlers that like the less weight, and want a little more ball speed, also they are better for bowlers that want to "hook" the ball,..same weight block with less weight to move..
There are arguments on both sides, both good and bad,..you'll know when it's time to change or not,....jim

Gave 15lbs a try for a few months and failed miserably.  Went back to 16lb and got my form (and carry) back.

Moving to 15lbs is not an automatic average raiser.  Works for endurance/strength issues but if those are not your problem, think hard before you replace your entire arsenal (because it can be difficult to switch back and forth).

Lessons is usually a better investment of money.

Jeff: I bowled with 16# equipment for 25 years, and went down to 15#'s 3 years ago (due to hand/wrist surgeries).

jimensminger gave the best analysis in this thread. There are pros and cons to both weights, but if you're a stroker/tweener, stay with 16#. You're not going to see enough difference to justify the change just for change sake.

There might be a time in your life when 16# starts to feel heavy, and that will be the sign to consider going down in weight.

I switched when I had tendonitis in 4 separate tendons in my arm and wrist. If I'd switched sooner, I probably wouldn't have had tendonitis in 4 separate tendons in my arm and wrist.

Good luck.
