When to put a new ball away....
« on: November 29, 2004, 01:31:53 PM »
Ever have a situation where you've spent the money on a new ball that you hope to use in your leagues and tournaments (possibly as your first ball out of the bag situation) only to find that the lanes dictate another ball choice? Are you willing to give up on the new ball and go with the better choice in your bag?

I decided after 3 frames in my Monday league to put away my new Rule that I had drilled out over the weekend. I didn't see a comfortable reaction from a variety of lines when I warmed up, and after going 9/X6/ (bucket), I put the ball away and went back to the Hot Wire that I had been doing so well with the past 3 weeks in this league. Managed to shoot 740 for the night as a result so I think I made the right call.

How long will you stay with a new ball before you put it in the bag? I'd love to hear what other people have done through the years in leagues and tournaments.

Ah, yes. The New-Ball-Itis syndrome. Beloved by the bowler, HATED By the teammates!!!

Jimmy - put that thing away!!! GRRRRR.....

I'll use a new ball as long as it works. When it stops working, it goes back in the bag - just like anything else.

OK I think everyone has this problem.

I can normally tell after a couple practice shots if this ball will work on this shot.

I did have one moment a couple yrs back when i first bought a La Nina, i was so intent on making this ball work, and i used it for about a month, and in doing so i dropped my avg from 200+ at the time to low 180's lol.

But since then, i have been able to tell if a ball will work or not.  and can normally tell once i am warmed up, i normally only need 5 shots max.

What was also funny is my teammate had a new ball that he was very tempted to go to all night long (Hot Rod Pro Stock) that was drilled the same day as my Rule, but he didn't like the reaction he was getting in practice and put it away in favor of an XXXtreme. He shot 690 something so I think he made the right call as well.

Unfortunately for all of our big series, we lost 4 out of 5 points tonight

Sawbones: The reason why I got a new ball is I'm gearing up for my tournament season around various little tournaments in New Hampshire, Vermont and Massachusetts. Right now I have a heavy oil ball (Animal) and then a step down from there would be my Eraser Pearl Particle and Hot Wire. I feel that the Rule was necessary for those medium/heavy shots that I may see from time to time. There have been nights where the owner of the Monday night league will place more of a crown shot with slightly heavier oil and that would have been a night where I think the Rule would have come in handy.

Otherwise, I have gone with my Hot Wire in this house as for the last 4 weeks I've used it (11 out of 12 games) I've been averaging 245+ with it. I guess I just wanted to see tonight if a stronger ball would carry better, and in this case the ball didn't match up with the lane conditions so I felt it was best to put it back in the bag.

Sawbones: I did use the new ball in 2 different practice sessions in two different houses over the past few days before my Monday league. I also threw another game before league with it and thought I had a handle on what the ball could do, but then in practice I didn't feel 100% comfortable with the ball reaction I was getting. That's why I went back to the Hot Wire very quickly in the night and there are nights where that has to happen. I try my best to read the lanes correctly before any major ball change is made. That's why on Tuesday nights in another house I will move into different lines and use different hand releases before I change to another ball, because the conditions are so opposite of what I face on Monday nights.

Trust me, I will spend some more practice time assessing the ball's capabilities and my ability with the ball before I put it in more tournament/ league play.
