Wher are YOU in the lineup?
« on: May 22, 2003, 05:02:02 AM »
Since this board is frequented by mostly serious bowlers, who are students of the game, it would be interesting to hear where in the lineups of your various teams we each are and why. Are you first because you can be depended upon to always have a decent steady game? Are you buried in the middle because you need the support from your team-mates both ahead of and behind? Or do you bowl last cause you are most likely to punch out when it is needed, regardless of your teams averages? As bad as I am, I do bowl last on my teams as I often get a lot of my pins in the last two frames.

Tell us which position you bowl in!

I bowl anchor in all 3 leagues.  All my teammates tell me they want me last so they can insure the game is won before it gets down to me or at least where I only need 9 for the win.

Seriously though, we keep our lineup simple, lowest average 1st, highest on bottom.  Stops arguments about why so & so in 2nd instead of 3rd, etc.  Course, our lead offs average is 198, still gives us consistency and we all get a good read off of his ball going into the 10th.

i lead off on both of my teams---i'm the best player on both teams. i have bowled in the anchor spot but i didn't like going last. the great budweiser teams of the 1950's had their best player, don carter, go first. he was THE player at the time. dick weber, the best clutch player, was anchor. this type of formula is the way to go about it.

In my college league I'm usually the anchor, but on my Fri mixed league I'm mostly fourth but started out first at the beginning of the season.

Anchor not because I have the highest average on the team but because I thrive on pressure.

I bowl lead off on my 3 leagues that have started so far.  I am one of the stronger members of the team and I am comfortable in that slot.

In my league the lineup is determined by your
average. The lowest average person starts off
and the highest average is at anchor. I've
been at anchor the whole season.

I used to be anchor, but I don't really have any defined teams yet, although I think I'll be in the middle when fall rolls around.  I think I'm bowling a league with Ron Bahr, and I'm guessing he'll be anchor.  In another league (3 man), I'll probably be the middle also.  Even though pressure doesn't get to me, I'd still rather have experience bringing up the end.  I always put pressure on myself to bowl well regardless of whether or not it means the team winning.  The way I look at it is that if you bowl your best, you'll give your team a chance to win.  The only person you can control as far as helping your team is yourself, and because the chain is only as strong as its weakest link, you should focus on yourself more than your team, because if you don't do well, the effect is that your team suffers.  If you put yourself first, the result is that you'll be putting your team first.  You shouldn't worry about what you all collectively need to do to win the game, bowl your best, and encourage your teammates, that's really all you can do.  I'm not one to look at the scoreboard and see that I only need 8 to win a game, and go at it with that attitude.  I'll always focus on striking, and because 10 is greater than 8, the win is automatic.

Monday I am the top average on the team and they asked me to bowl anchor, so I do.

Tuesday, I have 2nd high ave and will bowl either 1st or 4th.  We will be making up the 1st week, 2 bowlers were out of town due to a family emergency and I had Open House.

The only slot I tend to bowl badly in is 3rd on a 5 person team.  I don't know why, it just happens like that.

I bowl anchor on all of my teams.  I thrive on the clutch pressure to pull the game out of the fire, so bowling in the anchor spot gives me the most personal satisfaction and motivation....I definitely bowl my best in the anchor position.

I've bowled about every spot in the lineup over the years, and if I'm in the middle of the lineup I feel kind of lost.....my best scores come from the anchor slot.  I've tried leadoff before too, but I didn't feel right there either.

Typically, when setting up a lineup, I try to put a high averager and a good pace setter in the leadoff spot.  I'll use the number 2 and 3 spot for those who struggle under pressure.  I try to put someone who is very steady in the 4th spot, and I'll clean up the bottom.  Of course, I sometimes deviate from this philosophy when dealing with mixed leagues.....for example, on one of my teams, I have a grandmother type who likes to lead off, so I put her in the spot where she feels best, even though she is low averager on the team.  I try to work things around to where most everyone is satisfied with their position in the lineup.

On my 4 person team, I lead off mostly because I am the least nervous and can set a tone -- I have second high average on that team.  Lowest and/or least consistent goes second with the highest/most consistent going last.

On the 3 person, we do a simple lowest to highest.  I bowl second.

I should add that while both anchors are high averages, they are also great pressure players.  They have that internal thing that clicks on when they see that they need to pull out a great string of shots.

I lead off all the time.  On doubles, my son says that he needs the experience of going last for his school team, because he's expected to be their anchor in the next season.  I have the high average on my ladies trio team.  On my third team (mixed), I'm the second highest average.  I like to set the pace.  I believe the two strongest bowlers on the team should be first and last.

I bowl anchor.
Of the five I am the one with the coolest head.
Even if I am bowling bad I don't get upset therefore
I will net do anything stupid because I am mad at the lanes
Not to mention that 2 of the guys don't want it, and one guy on the team
always wants to be lead off

I will bowl lead off so that I can follow and read the lanes off the anchor bowler of the opposite team.  I can let our anchor bowler know if the lanes are starting to break down.  Other times I bowl before the anchor so he can read what happens off my line.
