Where do you see bowling 10 years from now?
« on: September 20, 2009, 08:40:28 AM »
A brunswick zone just closed recently in our area, and all centers seem to be struggling as open play and leagues continue to shrink.  Though it may be hard to be optimistic in this economic climate, does anyone see a light at the end of this tunnel?

its either going to be a complete joke where everyone averages 230+ or maybe someone will do something respectable and make it tuff again.

Bowling will still be around. There will be fewer tournaments. The league structure will change to differant levels of play. The reserection of duckpins will start. (ok last one is just a dream). It really is a shame that there are not very many duckpin houses left. Only played twice but was great fun.

Bowling is like life. Sometimes you are the ball. Other times you are the pins.

Well if it keeps going like it is now with interest in bowling deterating then I don't see much of a future at all. Maybe a few small leagues and some recreactional leagues but its not looking good at all

Ten years from now .. less bowlers less bowling centers fewer Pro shops less ball manufacturers.

What will be the cause:GREED! It happened to the Banks and I can see it happening to the Bowling Industry!

Over the next ten years I think you will continue to see the trend of smaller and privately owned houses closing.  AMF will consolidate their houses into one or two large centers in each community and will cater to recreational bowling vs league bowling.
If center owners can sell to developers (strip malls & Wallgreens)for a nice profit - we'll all have to travel farther to bowl.
What can we as bowlers do about it?  I guess just keep rollin' and try to get others interested, especially the youth.

In 10 years I think the bolwing lanes will be right next to the crane machine with the stuffed animals.  You put in $10, throw 10 balls, and get a ticket for every strike you roll to turn in at the counter for prizes.  A "Hambone" will get you enough tickets for a keychain whistle.

In 10 years, I see the economy getting better, new bowling centers opening up, more leagues, more pro shops, lower prices, more bowlers, more, more, more!!!  Think positive!

An alternate universe where bowling is a growing industry.  Hmmm, sounds good.  So easy a caveman can do it.  Maybe Geico will start building bowling alleys!

I think you will continue to see a decline in bowling numbers, both in sanctioned league bowlers and in lane beds in operation.

I believe the average age of a sanctioned bowler is in the 50’s they will continue to retire and/or die off faster than new league bowlers join.

I’m going to guess that sanctioning will level off around 1.2 million.

Open bowling will continue to grow slightly but not nearly enough to offset the loss of lineage from the league bowler decline.  So bowling centers will continue to close. The dollars invested just do not generate enough of a return.

I don’t believe league bowling numbers would increase significantly even if you gave away the bowling.  The actual cost of bowling is less than what most spend on other activities at the center, food, drinks, gambling, etc.

Society has changed, too many things to do other than bowling, people unwilling to commit to 33 weeks will not commit to 15 weeks.

Here is what I see both houses I bowl complain about league bowling going down losing team after team so there answer is raise lineage every year so there is no prize fund which in turn causes people the next year to not come back. In my eyes I would rather have all 40 lanes packed at making less money per game then charging 3 times the amount and only having 10 lanes going If one house around here would lower there lineage to undercut the other one then he would have all the business but instead they just keep going up I bowl 3 leagues a week and honestly I cant take them going up anymore I will have to drop out I just cant afford the hike myself I mean hell for what I pay in I could be buying a brand new car payment every month so undoubtably they will be closing down and blaming people for not coming in and bowling when how can we afford to support the bowling industry when they keep raising the prices themselves causing more people to quit coming then they say well we have less people so have to raise the price again and again why dont they realize that is the cause of people not coming back.

In fact my Saturday Night Mixed League is considering not being sanction this year, it will come up for a vote this weekend. The people feel they are getting less and less every year from USBC, so why pay the dues.
Me I could care less only because I am sanctioned thru my mens league, but some people are not happy, they say this will be there last year in this league if this gets voted in.
So it is starting to happen already.

ill be the first to say in the gutter Seriously though I think it will be huge. I would like it to be big in college, Norte Dame VS. USC for an example.
