Picking UP 7 (RH) or 10(LH)
« on: August 30, 2004, 02:08:04 PM »
What's the best way to pick up the 7(RH) or 10(LH)?

the easiest way is to hook at the pin which gives you more room for error, but if you are unsure of what the oil is, or if it's a spare shot, then your best bet is just to throw the ball straight.

I beg to differ. I think the most consistant way is to throw the ball straight at it. Doing this going from alley to alley, shot to shot it will not change.

Have a plastic bowling ball that is one pound less than the one you are using
in your normal game and throw it straight. From left to right for the 10 pin and from right to left for the 7 pin. Always using the area between the 4 and third arrows on both sides as your target zones.

For the 10 pin in all houses as a lefty I throw straight at the shot, usually aiming across the third arrow on my side throwing a diagonal across to the 10 pin. Sometimes I can use my strike ball for the shot if it's oily in the center, otherwise I go to a weaker ball when it's drier.

on a high scoring THS, i would play a hook at the opposite corner.  because the oil distance and volume is greater over the middle, going cross alley at the opposite corner will give you a similar reaction to your strile ball, as the backend will still be fresh, and the middle of the lane will hold the ball until it reaches the back and makes its turn.  you will again have hold area, so a pull to the left of a few boards shouldnt hurt, and the friction from the reactive ball will give it a chance to get over incase you push the ball right.  unless you are extremely accurate, using a plastic ball will probably leave you at a disadvantage, especially on a high scoring condition.

on a sport condition, i would say the complete opposite.  the plastic ball takes out every variable bowling can offer, leaving you with the same hand release and ball reaction every time.  if you are accurate, like i said, this will the best way to go.  taking the oil pattern out of play is a huge advantage, but only if you are able to make your spares.

Thanks for the replies. I have been working picking up the 7 standing right and throwing across the lane with my Spare Ball. I was wondering if anyone else tries this approach. I don't see many people in my leagues taking this approach.
