Where is the pocket? Please help us with our survey.
« on: July 04, 2016, 06:43:12 AM »
I'm new to your board, so if I've posted this to the wrong forum, please let me know.

I am a USBC Silver Coach, and my partner is a USBC Gold Coach.  We are conducting research for an upcoming book, and would really appreciate your help.  We have posted a short survey consisting of 9 photos of a bowling ball entering the pins, and seek bowlers' opinions as to whether or not the shot is in the pocket, and whether or not you think it will carry.  The survey is completely anonymous.  At the end, you have the option of entering your email address for a chance to win a copy of the book (once published), or to receive notifications regarding the book.  We will not spam you nor sell your address.

We are not trying to determine where the pocket is with this survey.  Rather, we seek only the opinions of bowlers of different calibers.  If you threw the shot depicted in the photos, would you consider it to be in the pocket?  Would you expect a strike from that hit?

If you would like to share your opinion, our survey can be found at http://pocket710.com.  Thanks in advance for your help.

There is far too little information in those pictures to answer the question "Will it strike".

The pocket is about location.   Draw a line from the center of the 7 pin, thru the center of the 1 pin, and extend beyond.

Place the ball so it's center is also on that line, and is in contact with the 1 pin.

That is the location of the pocket.

What the ball does after making contact at that location determines if it will strike.

Angle of entry, mass of ball, velocity of the ball are major factors in carry.

None of those factors can be determined from the pictures.

And you're over thinking the simple survey….. If you threw the ball and that was the location hitting the pins, is it a light hit, high hit,  or in the pocket… and do you think it will carry. That's it. That is all that is needed for an opinion survey.

Could ring a 10, Stone a 9 or 8 or miss the pocket completely and domino a strike. If they wanted a break down of results they would give you an essay section instead of strike or no strike

Dead money may be correct in that we do not have enough info to tell. I took it as I have to decide based on my bowling and how I get to the pocket. Do I believe I would have struck with that hit. That's how I judged each image.

Done the survey. There can also be a" maybe "on the strike yes or no questions. Percentage comes into play with those answers also. Kind of like asking " Why is the sky blue ?".There's different takes on that question

You see it as a simple survey.

The OP claims to be a Silver level, and along with a Gold level, are doing "research" for a book.

Are you interested in reading a book where such a simple survey would be considered research?

I agree with icdead$ but it's not my investment lol.

If it makes sense when t he write it great!

If it's about snap shots if where the ball is before going through the pins without any other info....uh...THEY will have an issue the whole thing making sense

From the look of the questions, it's not about whether or not the ball in the photo actually struck.

Just if you had been the bowler that had thrown that ball, would you have considered it a light, flush or high hit and if you think it would have struck in that position.

Their just seeing generally how wide the bowlers answering the questions are perceiving  the pocket to be if "they" had made the shot and they seen the ball in that position at the pins.

So it wouldn't be necessary for them to give specific information on how the ball in the photo was actually thrown.
