where on the approach?
« on: May 04, 2009, 02:41:09 AM »

If you are trying to play a down and in shot straight over the second arrow (10 board), what board on the approach do you have your left foot on?  Just curious because I think I have gotten into a bad habit and it is causing me to "chicken wing" a lot of my shots.

Thanks for the help.

If I play down 10, my right shoe tip is on the 20th board - the left shoe tip should be around 21-22 (I keep my feet quite close together).
I normally have a "11-board-gap" between target and starting position for the feet, can be larger when I move really deep and belly the shot.

 Dizzy,

I couldn't put my feet that close together if I tried! I wear wide shoes and would have to put one foot on top of the other, lol.

If I am trying to play down the 10 board ( for a righty ), my RIGHT foot is on 15 and my left foot is wherever it ends up to square me up and make my first steps comfortably.

I allow a five board difference between my foot and my armswing ( foot on 15, armswing over 10 ). This seems to work well for me.

This is how I do it also. Need to slide on 15 to go straight down 10. Try to start and end on same board when I walk. Now I vary a bit if I'm swinging, I cross over alittle on the second step and end a board or 2 left of where I started if playing deep inside and sending it way right.

There is an eight board difference between the inside edge of my sliding foot and my ball laydown point, so I would have to stand on 18 to play that line.

I have to start on 8 to lay the ball down on 10.  The ball comes off 5 right of my slide foot.  Start on 8 drift 7 left lay ball down on 10.

Pain in the butt laying the ball down on 2 or 3, stand on 0 with my whole body in the right gutter. Very exciting.

I like Dizzy have my right foot on board 20 and throw at 8,9, or 10. That is only when there's enough oil to throw a down and in shot. Because my speed is so slow 12.5-13.5 , that shot will only hold up for about a game of league play.

I drift 2 boards to the left and set the ball down 7 boards from my ankle.  I would need to stand 15 and end up on 17 to throw straight up the boards.

If i was to be setting down on 10 I would be standing left foot at 15. I walk perfectly straight and set the ball down 5 boards right of my left ankle.

get your hands on a copy of Larry Matthews' book The Pro's Approach.  This is the best book ever written for lining up whether it is straight up, pointing the ball, or swinging.  It is still available on ebay at times for a mere 15 bucks.  It will be the best money ever spent on your bowling career.

I'm actually reading Larry Mathews "The Pro Approach right now.  It reads very long hair but seems to be really good.  It is a little thin spiral bound red book and has a ton of good information in it.  Some of the stuff in it is rather hard to find elsewhere.

To me personally I always thought the term "down and in" was a lame term. I mean, down and in what? To me down and in means the ball is going from a left to left motion or a straight to straight motion then ball reacts towards the pocket, in other words never crosses one board to the right and is going left towards the pocket. So if your trying to only go over the 10th board but you aren't telling us where out on the lane the ball is projected too I would start the left foot on 10. So that would be 10 to 10 and breaks towards the pocket assuming you can play this shot. Standing on 20 or 25 hitting the second arrow is impossible to get you a down and in shot unless you chicken wing the hell out of it like Dick Weber which not many are good enough to do.

Well, I have pretty long but slender feet - and normal bowling shoes are a bit too broad/wide for me. It took a long way to find the SST 5 Sport I use with their sneakers style - so I can put my feet close together and do not step on the soles which you frequently find on "normal" shoes. My shoe tips are just 2 boards apart when I stand on the approach, so I am not the typical bowler in this case
