Where should I play??
« on: July 14, 2003, 04:35:47 PM »
Last night in league was a nightmare. Long, flat heavier pattern. Everything was a spare ball last night. Didnt find a consistent line until the 3rd game and that was the only game I was above my average. How do you combat a long, flat pattern. I tried every line I know how to play and none of the 5 or 6 would work. Finally, what worked for me was standing on 15 (RH), shooting over 10 but at an ever so much inside angle, almost throwing it towards the 1-3. The ball had enough movement in the last few feet to strike. But it is the first two games I cant get adjusted right. Should I play that same line in the first two or try something else??

How am I supposed to knock all 10 down with one ball?!?

Jeff and Rock,

I have bowled in a couple Team Challenges with patterns similar to this.  Due to my own experiences as well as watching the tour on a heavier condition, the shot that seems to work the best, is right up the middle of the lane.  Try going straight up around 12-13, or even playing 20 with the breakpoint being around 15.  The thing I see wrong, is that guys always want to pull out the super soakers and play up around 10, or even farther right, but they struggle more playing up the outside than the guys I see playing up the middle.  If you play outside on a flat pattern, if you miss right at all, there are too many boards the ball has to cover in order to get to the pocket.  If you are playing up the middle, if you miss right, unless you miss WAY right, the ball has a much shorter distance to make it back to the pocket.  Playing outside and missing right, washout.  Playing up the middle and missing right (maybe a couple boards), 2 pin, or with a little luck, carry a wall shot.  When I got on this pattern, I was using the old, burgandy TPS II and playing up 12.  I also hit the ball a ton as well.  I was shooting 195-210 consistently.  The other guys around me, were trying to use sanded Enforcers and were trying to play up 8-10.  They were shooting 160, because if they pulled the ball, the balls were rolling up to quickly and hitting the nose and if they missed right, it was basically o.b.  Take a ball that has an even reaction (Red Pulse, V2) and get in the middle.  I would rather hit the pocket and get 9 counts all day than mess with the outside and leave washout, then compensating and leaving big 4s.  What do you think?

Thanks for the input thus far.

Bones, based on what you said, I think that is exactly what I was doing the third game which happened to be my highest of the night. Stand far right, flatten out my wrist a bit and fire it toward the pocket. I should have thought of doing this in the previous two games but never really thought of playing a line like that. I am usually pretty good at adjusting and playing new lines but last night I was lost. I tried to shoot right up 8,9 and 10. Washout on all 3 lines. Then moved in more, came in on the nose. Finally I started playing that "outside-in" line and it worked. Well, that is what the summer leagus are for I guess. Practice for the winter!!

Rock,

Bones gave you the best plan. Only you should line up further right I would think and square up to the pocket, that way you are not pulling the ball to the pocket. A particle sanded to 600-800 should work well on this line. Most of the time you will leave easier spares for yourself. On this type of shot though if your speed is up and down you will have problems. You throw it too hard one time and the ball does not have a chance to get into a roll, you are going to leave an 8-10 or even a 5-7.
