Where to look?
« on: April 21, 2010, 11:37:40 PM »
I have a bit of a dilema. I have always looked right at the arrows and am pretty consistent when playing straight but I also noticed that I am highly speed dominant when I do this because I am placing the ball downward AT the arrows.

So last night I stared way out to my breakpoint and my rev rate was a bit higher and better off my hand but it was harder to aim yet easier to project the ball as I got deeper.

the whole point of me changing where I'm looking is to increase revrate slightly, better posture at the line (which did work perfectly), and to stay under the ball which I couldnt do before when looking close to me.

where should I be looking?

fyi- im a tweener, slightly speed dominant (17.5 off hand, maybe 250-275 revs depending on if I get off my hand clean) likes to start crossing ten and migrates to 15 to about 8 as the night goes on.

It's hard to give a precise answer, it's a matter of personal preference.  If you think you need to look further down the lane, in practice try adding 4 - 5 feet at a time until you think you hit an optimum.  --  JohnP

that makes sense. guess I should KISS, always seems to work out that way.

I used to look at the arrows, but struggled with accuracy since I always hit two or three boards to the side of what I was looking at (one eye is dominant over the other and therefore can cause this).  However, I also know that where my ball ends up at the breakpoint is much more important than where it crosses at the arrows.  A while back I converted to targeting the breakpoint instead of the arrows, and it only took me about one week to get used to it.  It has helped me project the ball better when moving left (I too am a little speed dominant and don't rev it up much and therefore am used to play the lanes straighter)  However, more importantly, I have found that I am more consistent and accurate than ever before!

Great subject.  I look at the arrows and always have trouble projecting the ball out as I get deeper.  Next time I practice I will try targeting the breakpoint instead and see what happens.

well think about it, if looking at the arrows you have to move both feet and boards that you look at in order to hit the same breakpoint. but if you move just your feet but look at the breakpoint, you dont have to move where your eyes are looking as you will still project to the same breakpoint.

I only tried it once so far and scored the same as usual but was able to keep my speed up as it raised my rev rate just a little bit (nothing drastic). I think i need to look a little bit closer to where i am seeing both the arrows and breakpoint (so the arrows are just visible in my line of sight.

ive heard of/read one method is to look past the breakpoint , thru the breakpont, then the arrows(visual traget) but that makes me lean forward and throw the ball "into the arrows" instead out and onto the lane.

just trying to get ideas to make me both more accurate and to have the ball contact my fingers longer/better follow thru.

I looked at the arrows for years. Then I discovered that for me, if I looked at the dots just off the foul line I seem to lay it down smoother. I can see my self going back to the arrows though.

i too use the dots just past the foul line but i also use the arrows.  If the ball wants to check-up and go high then i start moving my 2 point locations down farther.

I''ve been bowling almost 25 years and I''m still trying to figure out what I actually look at when I release the ball. I kind of do what Wes Mallot does. I pick a break point then pick a target arrow.  I look at my target arrow while I am walking but at release I really have no idea where I am looking .
I think I draw an imaginary line from the breakpoint to the target arrow to where my body is and somehow I release the shot to connect all the dots..

I have tried to watch my target arrow all the way through release and all it does is cause me to release the ball way out in front of me with no hand..

I wouldn''t say I am the most accurate out there but I can hit arrows and breakpoints on a consistant basis.

thats what happens to me. only its as if my brain says to my arm and hand to stop at the arrows bend down so you can throw at the ground, and this causes me to get less on the ball.

I'm right eye dominant and read somewhere that for me, I should look and aim 2 boards to the right of my intended target.  It works, but I still tend to miss my target, due to other reasons that i'm still trying to figure out.  I have a bad habit of pulling to the left.
