Being mentally tired.
« on: June 06, 2004, 07:35:53 AM »
OK... situation. You've bowled 9 games of qualifying and had made the cut for round robin match play, but you are only 100 pins out of the cut to make the stepladder final. For the first three games you bowl fine, winning two of your matches, and you jump in to sneak into the show. However, your last three games, you're mentally and physically tired. Your ball speed has noticably slowed down, and the are you have been playing all day is gone... not to say to mention... yeah, you're mentally tired (i have to mention it again).

What do or what would you do? You're tired, mentally and physically. Other than suggesting me to work out, what do you think about when you're mentally tired when bowling or playing golf... whatever?

Eat some chcolate, get some caffine.  You'll need some kind of stimulant.  Remember, food is fuel when you're tired.

When I was working .. now RETIRED .. that was my biggest problem MENTAL FATIGUE. I was bowling every night after work .. one of those nights two leagues. When Thursday came around I use to snooze in the office and have my people wake me after an hour or so. Even then bowling really suffered on the last two days of the week. Once I was TIRED there was no way I could get that ball to do what I wanted! I don't think it was as obvious as it should have been .. I now can see it when I have busy days and attempt to bowl!

What did I think about in those cases? .. As far as bowling goes I use to try and SLOW THE BALL DOWN. Once you mess with the SPEED your game is shot! Start to move with the alternating speeds and keep getting DEEPER and DEEPER in trouble. Never really did overcome it!

Lemme see. Tired. Mentally and physically. Describes my average day!

Do you drink lots and lots (and lots more) water while you're bowling? Usually mental fatigue can be at least partly attributed to mild dehydration. Eating sugar/caffeine/etc can give you a temp. lift, but the crash will be further down than when you started.

I've started carrying a sugarless energy drink with me (red bull has one, rock star has one, and monster has one) and sipping it slowly after about 4-6 games. Seems to keep me going a bit longer.

When I'm actually throwing the ball, if I know my target, line, etc, I can generally get through it. The hard part for me is staying together between frames. The drink does seem to help a bit.

Good luck!

You can meditate while you are waiting to bowl and depending on what kind of meditation you do you could actualy feel better each time you throw a ball.

If you were bowling in a doubles championship and you were doing great but your partner admitted he or she was mentally and physically tired, what would you say to him or her?  That's what you need to say to yourself in that situation.

As always, focus on your execution not on your results.  However, when you're mentally tired, cut out as many distractions as you can.  The more distrations you can cut out, the less mental energy you'll expend overall, leaving you with enough "stuff" to focus on executing well.  Personally, I do this by sitting on the closest bench/chair to the lane and turning my back to everything but the lane when I'm done with the shot.  Make the shot, sit down.  Only allow the mind to focus on making the next good shot.  Forget about the tournament, forget about your score, your car, your job, your whatever, keep things simple and let your mind focus on only one thing: bowling.  It is less mentally fatiguing to focus on one thing than to attempt to multi-task and overclock your synapses.
