Ron C's Magic Carpet
« on: May 26, 2007, 08:37:39 AM »
Ron,

I was preparing my equipment for the start of summer league, and as I felt how each thumb felt with your ingenious carpet, I thought of this thread.  It is my sincerest hope that you NEVER stop the availability of this product, as there would be no other product on the market that would feel as yours.

I have never been so satisfied with a bowling accessory before, and I wish to say that I hope you and your product stay for many many years.

It sounds like your thumb is too tight still.  The Carpet is roughly 4-5 pieces of white tape in thickness.  The first time I tried it I didn't really have enough room and I had the same problems.  The other thing is to make sure the Carpet is 1/4" below any bevel on the thumb hole.  Also, if you squeeze the ball, whether the hole is the right size or not, you can still hang and you can rip up the back of your thumb from the friction.  With my reverse thumb pitch, my thumb was usually raw from using the Carpet, so I stopped for a while.  After experimenting with pitch, I'm a lot more forward, learned to stop squeezing for the most part, and have no issues with my thumb.

Saw Mill,
You gona make me blush, but thank you for the kind words, I am glad you like the product.

Cinch,
I wish there was an easy answer to your question about thumbhole prep for Ron C’s Magic Carpet.
The problem is everyone has a different thumb, thumbhole and release. Since I travel the country giving bowling lessons I look into a LOT of thumbholes and here is what I have discovered.

About 70% of bowlers keep their thumbholes too loose so those bowlers can usually use Ron C’s Magic Carpet without making the thumbhole any larger.

The remaining 30% is a mixture of bowlers that keep the thumbhole the right snugness but have enough tape in the hole that some can be removed to accommodate the Carpet and others that simply do not have room for it.

Make sure the Carpet is in the center of the back of your thumb and not off to one side, also make sure it is ¼ inch down into the hole and not near the top.

Also make sure you are not “knuckling” the ball, meaning you are bending your thumb in the thumbhole to grip the ball. If you do that your thumb will come to a point at the knuckle and rub on just one small spot. The Carpets are very soft but if you rub in a small spot they can too abrasive.

Before you tried Ron C’s Magic Carpet did you use tape in the back of your thumbhole?

Bowl great!

Ron,

Have you got noncomittal issues?  You did not say that as long as you live you will continue the production and sales of this "magical" product.  You better give advance notice if you ever decide to stop so that those like me can get about 100 pieces or more.   After all, you just cannot cut of a carpet addict cold turkey, and let us not forget the therapy that will be needed from such an ordeal.
