Which ball should I go with?
« on: September 14, 2009, 02:15:49 PM »
I currently have a Virtual Energy and a Hyroad as the two primary balls in my bag right now. The Hy-road is sort of my benchmark type, go to ball and the VE is basically just a more aggressive version of my Hy-road. Love em both. So what I'm looking to add here is a less aggressive(longer and a little less angular) version of my Hy-road. Something that I can ball down to from the Hy-road and have a good look on broken down/dryer conditions. Ball Speed is normally 17-18mph, extremely low track(pap 2 1/4 over, 2 3/4 up), rev rate is 475-500. I'm open to all companies and I'm torn between a few balls here:

Roto Grip Nomad Solid - Looks like it might be a little earlier than I want, but close.
Storm Fast - Same as the Nomad.
Storm Reign - Looks like it might be a little more angular than I want.
Hammer Emerald Vibe - Same as the Reign.
Hammer Onyx Vibe - Looks like it might be a little earlier and more angular than I want.

What do you guys think? Any help is much appreciated.

I would go with the Fast, you can drill it to have any type of reaction. I have one drilled to be smooth downlane for when the lanes break down so I can stay a little straighter. But still has good length.

The Rotogrip Mars with a moderately strong drilling might be a good fit.  It will give you a cleaner reaction in the dry and be more continuous downlane thanks to the high RG, low diff core and hybrid cover, but it won't get jumpy unless you put a really skid/snap drill on it, and it won't be as weak as you might expect if you put a somewhat strong drill on it.  And definately rule out the Reign -- it is stupidly strong on the backend (and strong in general).

How about another HyRoad but with a less aggressive drill on it? Then fine tune the cover to get the reaction you want.

I've had 3 cherry vibes already and they all rolled great too, but they were more aggressive than what i drilled them for.

I think another Hy-road is just too much ball for what I want no matter how i lay it out.

The freeze and the mars are definitely interesting ideas. I think the mars might be a little early though, but very close to what I want.

I think now it's between these:

Storm Fast
Roto Grip Nomad Solid
Roto Grip Mars
Columbia Freeze

Thanks for the feedback so far guys! Keep it coming!

Nomad Solid is a little early? Maybe a Nomad Pearl?

900 Global Lunatic.

Plenty of reaction, and you can drill it strong/weak depending on your preference.  Definitely a step down from the HyRoad in terms of overall hook on a dry pattern, but it still hits hard.  I would prefer one with a moderate drilling, not too strong, and then polish the cover up a bit.  Should help you get down the lane and avoid too much overreaction.

I've decided to go with the Roto Grip Mars. I think that hybrid coverstock will give me exactly what i'm looking for.

Thanks to everyone who helped out, it was much appreciated! And if anyone has any input on the Mars, I'd love to hear it. thx
