I would love to see the USBC do a study on
the carry percentage of Plastc, Urethane and
Reactive Resin.

Get out the robot and have it throw 100 shots
of each ball on a lane condition meant for
that type of ball and lets see what the
carry percentage is.

Carry is a result of the correct entry angle into the pocket. The type of material that goes through has no relavance. If a 15lb reactive and plastic ball both enter the pocket at the same board with the same angle, speed, rotation, etc, the carry percentage will be the same.

The reason why reactives, in general, carry better than plastic is due to the amount of entry angle that they can create.

Someone please correct me if I am worng...

your right, but i still think it would be cool if they did the testing thing global900pbaexp mentioned. maybe on a really dry pattern so urethanes and plastics would have a chance.

That would be fun to see. I would like to see the carry percentage of the balls on the same THS, but have the reactive deeper inside than the urethane and than the plastic angled in from the corner. Good times in bowling land there, lol.

You are hereby corrected.

If every shot is dead flush, yes, there is no difference.

Otherwise, you are very wrong. Coefficient of restitution comes into play, as do the height of the gutters, and the resiliency of the side boards, and the speed of the ball thrown.

I'd also say that the ball's rotational axis and the coverstock's friction play some role in carry, or at least allow more margin for error. I think that this would make a throwbot study quite difficult. Any ball can carry well on a good hit, so I would not wonder if results were pretty similar between polyester, urethane and reactive material, once a line and angle has been established. I think the real difference would be the carry upon "weak" hits, with some margin of release error. Maybe a throwbot could be porgrammed to carry out a predefined but repeatable shot sequence that has some stray errors included - I think that would reveal some differences.
