rather bowl on? A lane with 55 feet of oil(2 foot buff, and same amount of oil covering all 40 boards), or a bone dry lane with absolutley no oil at all. Which would be easier? Would you be able to get your average?

Oil for numerous reasons, but one that has not been mentioned yet. That is the lack of oil, especially on a wooden lane surface would also tend to do more "harm" to your equipment.

Maybe I misunderstood the question. Are we talking about a lane stripped to nothing or a lane with the 3 units of oil minimum on the lane allowed by the ABC?

If the lane had absolutely no oil, the ball would have no chance at getting down the lane. If you try to throw a slayR or scout, or even Plastic or rubber the ball hits the lane and turns. Even with a end over end release it will still start to roll right away. I have seen something similar to this at my home house where they really didn't oil for 3 or 4 days. As soon as my white dot hit the lane it went left and was in the ditch by 40'.
I have also bowled on 55+ feet of oil this year when the machine forgot how to lay down stripper. My icon 300 dulled to 400 wouldn't even move. This shot is atleast playable and by the end of the night you have a chance. The other shot would not even be possible to get the ball down the lane to the pins without 25+ mph and 0 hand and revs.

Okay. I'm changing my mind. I'm a bowler! I can do that! Give me the oil. I guess I didn't realize we were talking about no oil whatsoever.

I would like to play on either, but with dry you take out all the normal adjustments lol you just play preying the ball has enough speed. lol with oil it would start to carrydown and the shot will get sloppy, possibley opening up but at 55 feet that's not entirely likely.

In a local tournament we have here every year (invitation only) the house we bowl at has some really messed up lanes. 6 lanes, 5 people on 6 teams and 5 games. Well last year the guy oiling the lanes put down TRIPLE oil, you couldn't get a ball to hook worth anything. I still managed a 170 my first game, 2nd game the oil began to break down a bit and i started rolling 200s. by the middle of the 3rd game the lanes were really starting to dry out, i was taking an old blue pearl hammer and hooking it from 20 out to 5 and back (and i really don't have THAT much hand). by the 5th game everyone just kinda started seeing how fast they could roll the ball and people were rolling down in the 130s or so. one guy threw the ball 27 mph and the ball still hooked. So i think i would rather bowl on extreme oil rather than bone dry.
PS. The gaurdian on the lane was in very very bad shape. they just replaced the lanes this year and what do you know... the lanes don't get as dry anymore
