It will make the front of the ball slick and will lead to squeezing or crimping the thumb to hang on to it.

That is where and what I have used for years. Never liked the texture of white in the front and black in the back seemed tacky and affected my release. Back before the precut tapes I used black electric tape and since prefer the AMF 1" black. I keep my thumb hole taped up pretty tight. Only negative I find is that if it is unusually cold or thumb just is smaller than normal I have to add too much and grip is soft and span lengthended a bit. I don't knuckle the ball normally and even use beige tape wrapped around the sides of my thumb to make the release even smoother.

It does not make the thumb slick. If you use a piece of black tape in the front side of the hole it can vary what you get. If you use regular bowlers tape it can be normal feel when you start but can cause you to hang up a bit if it gets warm. I use Valentino's Franken tape so that I never have a problem with hanging up, if my thumb heats up. I put it on the front side and I get the same release very time. Some balls have naturally tacky insides as do some thumb slugs. Valentino's Franken Tape makes it feel right every time without changing the pitch or size much at all.
