Who else hates the 8-10
« on: January 10, 2009, 04:21:47 PM »
Was bowling a tourney today. Don't expect to make the cut its usually outrageously high, like 740. But bowling a squad today i was involved in the eliminator, which pays some decent money, and got crushed by a pocket 8-10.

I made the first cut by 2 pins, was the second cut, and in the third game a pocket 8-10 turned what would have been a 258(i struck out after it) into a 226, and kept me from being first in the eliminator to third.

Just needed to rant, god I hate leaving 8-10s.

there is no such thing as a "crushed" pocket 8-10

some some hand or slow down.  The way i leave an 8-10 is if its a 2-8-10 and then a pin hits the 2 over and the 8 10 is up other then that it would just be a weak ten

If you're striking prior to leaving the 8-10, your entry angle normally isn't that bad.  However, if you left an 8-10, you threw a bad shot.  I've seen people with high rev rates leave them a few times just because they threw it too fast and the ball skated through the puddle in the middle of the house shot, for example.  A little extra deflection with a small entry angle on a light hit is all it takes, just like leaving the 7-10 off a light pocket hit.

Last year, I threw the ball like absolute dogsh*t once after getting the front 9 and left an 8-10 on the first ball of the 10th frame.  Cost me the chance at a 300, cost me all of the jackpots that game (all I had to do was mark and I would have swept the pots that game), and I'm pretty sure it cost my team the game as well.  I can count the number of times I've left the 8-10 since then on one hand.  So yes, I too hate the 8-10.

You never know, there could be someone out there that has crushed the pocket and left it. Just the other day I was telling my friend I think it's almost impossible to leave a solid 7-9. Well later that day.... It happened so you never know.

i have left an 8-10 after the front 8..that hurt.  growing up i left a few 7-9's, but i dont think i have left a 7-9 except when the 3 pin fell.  picked up the 7-9 a couple of years ago.

the only way to leave a crushed 8-10 is really by being a lefty..and THAT'S a bad break a righty leaving it is just weak in the pocket.

Back in the early 70's I threw what I thought was a perfect shot in my Thursday night men's league.  And I did what I had seen others do at times, I turned my back and came back to sit down.  My friend said "You left an 8 - 10."  I said, without looking, "No way that ball left an 8 - 10!"  Well, of course it did, and I've never turned my back on a strike ball since.  --  JohnP

I see the 8-10 often enough if I get a little fast or not quite hit it hard enough at the bottom.

I absolutely murdered the pocket on night and left a 7-9 people are still laughing about it.

A 7-9 leave for a righty is a weird leave, borderline bad break.

A pocket 7-10, or a sweep 7-10 is a tough break, but even that shot is not great or not pured.

But an 8-10 leave is never a good shot.  That is never a bad break, that is just a bad shot.  Too much speed, with no entry, and no hand.

Of course this is my opinion, but some will probably agree with it, some won't.

Same here, although when I was younger I used to leave it when I got a little fast and tugged it. Admittedly I probably had 2 revs on the ball.

Back in the day of rubber and plastic balls and flatter patterns, 8 - 10's were fairly common, the ball didn't drive through the pins like it does today.  --  JohnP
