Baking Bowling Balls

Has ne1 ever baked their balls b4? I tried this lastnight with my columbia pulse. All i have ever done to it was clean it with rubbing alcohol. So this ball has got guite a few games on it. Man did that ball start sweating as soon as i put it in the oven. I put it in and took it out to clean it 11 times and the ball just got too hot. Should i do this again until all the oil is out or no? Thanx

NO, baking a ball is the worst way of extracting oil possible. The heat from the oven can cause core/coverstock separation and also the ball my "bleed" out plasticizers which aid in a ball to grip the lane. The safest way(s) to do this at home are either use the dishwasher without the dry cycle or submerge the ball in a bucket of hot tap water and degreasing detergent like dawn. Remove every 15 minutes and wipe with a ball cleaner. Repeat as necessary. Once finished, allow 24 hours for ball to dry before using it again!!

Rock, I have tied soaking the ball in a bucket and didnt get anything out of the ball. Now this ball has got around 80 games or more on it with only cleaning the ball with rubbing alcohol. So i tried baking as one of my fellow bowling mates recomended it. Man did it take some oil out. But i have also heard stuff like what your saying so im going to stop. It took alot out and the look of the ball is a lot diff. now. I cant wait to try it out Fri. nite. I probably should go get it resurfaced shouldnt I? Thanx

cOMMON SENSE SAYS don't do this!

Actually you should have re-surfaced it first.

If you MUST use the oven, use a separate thermometer, not the oven's gauge.
Set to 150 - 180 MAX. Test it to make sure it's not higher than 180. 150 is PLENTY!

Put it on sturdy aluminum baking tray, sit ball on aluminum foil on the baking tray, maybe a couple of layers worth so the oil does not go anywhere or get on anything else (Curl up the edges of the foil).
After 15 minutes, take it out, wipe it down thoroughly with paper towels, put it back in for another 15 minutes, MAXIMUM. Wipe down again.
Don't do this while the wife or girl frined (or boy friend) is home; they will KILL you.
Put on kitchen vent to the outside; Those oil fumes coming off the ball are toxic! This is dangerous! Don't do it.
