I've been referred too as HARD HEAD because I refuse to ADJUST the surface of a ball to the condition I'm bowling on. Evidently it's an acceptable thing for bowlers to BUY a bowling ball .. find it rolls good on a certain condition .. go to a different condition .. ENHANCE THE BALL SURFACE in some way .. then when they go back to the original surface .. enhance it again!

I say this is NOT ACCEPTABLE to me. IF the ball doesn't roll right when you return to the original condition WHAT DO YOU HAVE? I guess you could take a PORTABLE SPINNER with you so that you will NEVER be surprised .. then again you may never TWEAK it enough to be satisfied.

This all OCCURS because I state that THELANE 1 GOLDEN NUGGETis CONDITION SPECIFIC in a posting that asks thoughts about WORSE BALL OF 2003. Yet there were people who CONDEMNED other manufacturers balls .. NO ONE UTTERED a sound about those comments.

I'LL shout it from the HIGHEST HILL TOPS .. the GOLDEN NUGGET is CONDITION SPECIFIC (in my opinion) AND IS OVER PRICED.

Fear in knowing that you in NO
way could have watched any of the VIDEOS!!
I think you need to go learn some different
releases and get with technology. I have never
thrown a GN but, FROM the VIDEOS, I will certainly
be buying one to fit right above my VERY versatile
Pearl Carbide Bomb, which I CAN use on a VARIETY of
conditions. from medium heavy to very wetdry and all
I HAVE TO DO IS CHANGE HAND POSITIONS!!!!!!!!

There are some that BEFORE they throw a ball change
the coverstock so they KNOW what the coverstock is before ever throwing
the ball. They do this so they CAN adjust the coverstock for DIFFERENT
lane conditions, while KNOWING what they have to do to get
the reaction back they originally had for a different CONDITION.

(man I always wanted to be this stubborn..... NOT)

the coverstock so they KNOW what the coverstock is before ever throwing
the ball. They do this so they CAN adjust the coverstock for DIFFERENT
lane conditions, while KNOWING what they have to do to get
the reaction back they originally had for a different CONDITION.

DUD ( I left the E out on PURPOSE)

Why on earth would you buy 10 different balls
for 10 different condions when you can do what
I said before and buy 4 balls at the most??
10 @ 140 (internet pricing) plus $45-$60x 10 for
drilling and inserts. thats about $2000.00 give or take.

or you could buy
4 balls at $220 drilling included from Doug Sterner and
spend another $175 on a ball spinner and $40 on various
sandpapers and scotchbrite pads and have a complete well rounded arsenal.

Let's see what I've read ..

Buy a NEW BALL base on it's characteristics .. soon as I get the ball adjust the COVER .. this way you can adjust the cover in the future and know what you're starting with .. OK .. UNDERSTAND .. makes sense .. you don't want to make changes to something and not know what your starting with!!

Buy a ball that the manufacturer sells as BEST USED ON HEAVY OIL .. but don't expect it to fit your style .. that's not realistic ..

From what I've read .. some bowlers are CONVINCED that ADJUSTING BALL SURFACES is a given .. that manufacturers DON'T TEST these balls and KNOW NOT what they are selling! Bowlers OUT SMART DESIGNERS and have missed their callings .. GUESS I LEARN MORE EVERY DAY!

I could elaborate, but the statement stands on it's own. Regardless, getting back to the premise, cover alterations in many instances are an unavoidable necessity. As bowlers, we all have different styles. A heavy oil ball to one player is a medium condition ball to another. Manufacturers have no way to classify a ball that will have the same meaning to everyone, so they do the best they can to label expected box reaction for most bowlers.

Ironically, what you didn't mention is that most companies also give written instructions on how to alter the surface to get different reactions. They recognize tweaking may be necessary to get the reaction you want.

Even if you don't want to purposely 'change' the cover, you have to alter it (for maintenance purposes) every once in a while if you want your stuff to last and continue to perform. Once you learn how to do this, it's not hard to get the cover back to original specs, or at least close enough where differences are negligible.

I believe your reluctance to touch the cover is more out of fear and ignorance than anything else. If you want to learn, you can! But it goes back to that "HARD HEAD" thing again.

Well certainly one drawback to having 2-3 balls and altering the surface to meet conditions is that most tournaments will not allow you to alter the surface of the ball during competition. If you've put up a $250 entry fee, suddenly spending that extra cash on a few more balls looks like a good decision.

However, for most people who don't bowl tournaments and stick to the same house, it does make sense to only keep a few balls around and tweak the cover to get what you need. You can also eliminate unintended overlap in your arsenal by teaking covers.

You can adjust with any ball by changing hand positions - that doesn't make the ball you're doing it with "versatile". That makes *you* versatile. Give me the biggest hook monster with the most aggressive drilling and I can throw it dead straight, make it hook three boards left, make it hook three boards right, make it hook 30 boards left, or make it do an "S" on the lane.

Altering the surface of a ball before you ever throw it is like salting your food before you taste it. Sometimes it doesn't make sense, sometimes you just *know* it will need it.

This is why you try to do your homework on balls before you buy to help eleviate much of the coverstock adjustments. I admit most every ball i buy I adjust the cover after 3-6 games. The initial read gives me a starting point and the rest is fine tuning. For the average house bowler where house shots don't often vary much this is grand. For tourneys where you don't know the conditions you will see multiple balls can be key for quick lining to scores.
I understand many people don't like the adjustment period to a new ball and its new chracteristics, but why limit yourself by not tweaking to find out.

Tires can roll on the road with 8-10lbs of pressure but why limit their performance when they are most efficient at 30-35.Sorry bad analogy but true. I have had 3 out of the last 5 balls I did not like in box condition. But with minimal adjustment 2 have made it to the most used bag. Joe, do as you want and some balls never fit your game no matter what you do but sometimes at least its worth a try to find out. Good luck and I hope it all works out in the end for you or at least that new ball has good trade value.
