Who throws 14# balls?
« on: March 27, 2004, 09:17:18 PM »
Are there any people in here who have dropped to a 14# ball?  I was at the center yesterday and a friend just got a new ball.  I picked it up and knew right away that it was only a 14 pounder.  I liked the way it felt and started thinking.  Hate it when I do that.  Anyway, I dropped to a 15# a few years ago and it was a smart move for me.  Could it be that going to a heavy or mid 14# ball is a smart move too?  Keep in mind, I'm a big guy.  I'm like 6' tall and 230 and have a lot of hand.  Give me your thoughts!

I have had compete arsenals in  weights 14,15,16 and never lost pin count. I may in fact gained pin count by dropping 14#

I'm almost sorry I went back to 15#.

I have too many balls right now to reinvest back in 14.

It's all bout comfort and control. if you are more consistent with a lighter ball, it's the one to use.In the end it's about knocking them down and if 14 does it for you better than 15 then you will avg better.

I dropped to 14 hammers and my scores and pin action were great. I think strong cored balls make no difference in weight. these are not 14# ball from the three pc era.

A bowler on my team who is 57 went to 14 lb stuff and has been raising his average back to where it has been for the past few years---198 to 200.
With the technology in the cores and coverstocks available today going down to 14 or 15 is no loss at all, IMHO. Less wear and tear on your arm and more control is what I've heard from several people who made the switch.
Another bowler switched last year and raised his average up to 215 by going down to 15......
 Just food for thought................

I normally throw light 14 pounds (my benchmark ball x-factor) and pin carry and action is fine for me, BUT when I throw my 15# I do carry alot better.

AM not A CHICK OF BOWLING but I wanted to be in Manda's clique And why would I "saw" pins in half, THATS A WASTE OF PINS! I'd rather blow it over with my storm, and 21mph ball speed on dry shots.

Ernie,

I'm 5'10"-250 and I throw 14lb stuff. I had a wrist injury and dropped down two years ago. I haven't noticed any loss of carry or pin action.

However, I always had a softer ballspeed than usual ( around 14-15mph) and didn't have a problem with "overthrowing" the lighter stuff.

Bones has the right idea. Don't go to 14lb until necessary, but when it is, don't be afraid of it cause with the strong cores it hits almost as hard.

I tried a 14 pound ball by accident.
Bought a SCB as 15 pound off here and had it drilled
to find out it was 14 pound.
Did not work for this big guy. Threw the sucker
right thru the bp most of the time, unless the
lanes were dry and then the ball burnt out too
quick.
