who would join a league like this?
« on: May 07, 2010, 08:55:29 AM »
Guy asks me to join on a late afternoon Sunday league...sanctioned. Personally, wouldn't like being committed to a league especially since one of the 3 leagues I'm already on has the same format.

He says "it's cheap, it's only 14$ a week and there is no prize fund!". My Thursday league is 15$ last two years and was 14 dollars for many years before that. It has a decent prize fund but nothing like my 15 dollar a week Friday night league.

I ask him, if there is no prize fund and lineage is like 9 something dollars....where the hell is the money going towards?! He had no clue. So either he's oblivous there really is a prize fund, or the secretary fee is 5 dollars or close to it or someone is ripping someone off.

Ask for a breakdown of the league dues.  It should be in the bylaws.  The old saying, never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity, should rule here.  It's more likely that the guy just doesn't know or care.  Bowlin's $14.  That's it.

Or his remark may mean to imply that there's not a significant prize fund, that even if you win, you won't be making your money back.

$15 for league dues, with lineage of $9?
where are you? Arkansas?

If I can find a league for $20 here in NJ, I'm thankful. They're rare and far between.

If someone asked me to join a leauge and then says "no prize fund" and your paying $14 a week. My 1st question would be then wheres all that money going. I wouldn't join that leauge.

I'm sure there's some kind of prize fund just none of them ever pay back what you pay out unless your on a high roller scratch money leauge.

Most leauges in North Eastern IL are $15/wk. There's a few that are $20-$25/wk.

our huge summer league we got going this summer is 64 4 person teams (3 guys 1 girl) and its 15 a week and since its so big we only get charged 7.25 linage and the center put an extra 2 grand in the prize fund. Not bad for a summer league.

Arkansas? lol....Texas actually...and it is 14 dollars a week with 9 something in lineage. Yes it's sanctioned and let's put a 1.00 for the secretary fee. Now, where is the rest of the money going towards?

The cheapest league I've been able to bowl in lately was the Monday league I bowled on an air force base this year at $17 a week. Most of the houses in MA are well over $10 a night lineage for 3 games, so if you want a decent prize fund expect to pay a minimum of $21 a night and sometimes up to $30 if you want a highly competitive league.

I too would not bowl a league where I didn't know where the break down of fees were going beyond the lineage.

Maybe he meant there's no monetary payout, meaning it's a trophy league.  Most of our leagues are $10, $8.25 for lineage.  Quite a bit of money goes into the prize fund from half pots.  --  JohnP

I think some facts are missing.  He could mean that they prize fund is very small, or it could all go to awards or prizes.

However, if it truly is $9 for lineage, $1 for the secretary and $4 into a black hole, then no, I would not bowl in that league.
