Why all the h8ing on the multi-drilled?
« on: December 17, 2009, 11:31:03 PM »
They're easily the best bargins to be had, and roll just as good as NIBs or single-drills.

They may not be as pretty, but nothing I like better than beating the snot out of someone who's throwing the latest and greatest when I'm chucking my old thrice-drilled Storm El Nino or thrice-drilled Track Rising (which I paid $10 and $5 for respectively).

Anybody else here have any love for balls with more than one drilling?

My Gravity Shift got me a clean 668 in the doubles block at Nationals, was my go-to ball on medium to longer patterns all summer in the PBA Experience league I won, and I shot a 300 with it a few months ago in league (16 consecutive strikes, then smashed an 8 pin).  I bought it for $30 after it''d been plugged twice by my friend (I track over the plug material even!), and it''s got who knows how many games on it, but it''s still one of my strongest pieces.

Same here, the majority of my equipment over the years has had some sort of plug. It must not be hurting too much, I think I'm doing pretty decent.

I haven't had any thrice-drilled gear, but I've had some twice-drilled stuff and it seems to be exactly the same to me.  Great bargains for balls you never got upon first release.

I use a couple of 2x and 3x drilled pieces for practice, but that's about it.

It all depends on where the plugs are and how deep they went.  Several deep plugs removing material from the core will affect how it rolls and hits.  I don't mind a single hole plug in my track, but I don't want a ton of it.  The plug material isn't the same as the normal reactive resin/particle, so if you track over 3-4 plugged holes, it's not going to roll the same.

I have 2 Shifts & an X-Factor I''ve plugged & redrilled.  One Shift that I bought on here from another bowler & the other one was mine originally, but wanted it breaking later.  The X-Factor I bought from JC''s site.  I''m also thinking of bringing my old Columbia Blue Knight out of retirement & will need the thumb plugged & redrilled for my current span & specs.  Been bowling on some really really dry lanes lately.

Over the years I've bought maybe 10-15 ONE DRILL balls that I've had plugged and re-drilled. Remember only one being of any use to me, that was the AMF TRIUMPH. Gave all the re-drills away with very few games (that I put on them). Perhaps it was all psychological .. but re-drilled balls don't work for me!

I haven't bought a brand new ball for years. I'd rather buy five used balls for 150 dollars than one ball for that much new. I also don't have the money to continually buy new stuff. Most of my equipment had been drilled at least twice, with others around 3. I wouldn't go much more than that, but I can't say that they roll bad. May not look pretty some of them but they get the job done.

i do have some reasons some people might not like:
(1) i remember selling a fired up to someone here that had 50 games on it and then i ended up seeing next week listed on ebay with "only 4 games on it". yeah only 4 games from the time i sold to you maybe.
(2) depending how cheap you get the ball once you add the plug to it the price can start to get 1/2 way to new.

The hating has to do with core dynamics.  It has been said that if you plug and redrill into a different part of the ball, you drill out more of the core.  Therefore, taking away from the original dynamics, or core strength.  So, in that respect, some people get bent out of shape when it comes to multiple plugged equipment.

I think it also can come down to color match on the plug job.  I have bought some balls in the past where i have replugged thetop 1/ inch of the plug job on the ball to get the colors to match.

the only new ball i have i dont throw ...i gave it to buddy from work.have nothing against new gear, but im in a nice situation with my pro shop one of the owners has my same specs.and he goes through a ton a gear,so all but my oynx vibe santa is bringing me all my stuff is single drill used equipment(most under10-20 games) get them for a third of the price.and with me just now getting back from a 15 yr old hiatis from bowling i cant tell the difference.

i would'nt try or buy one with a bunch of plug/redrills but what im doing right now works for me....now if i can only solve my problems on the lanes id be golden   or maybe i can just blame my *used gear* lol

nice thread will make for some good debate
