Why are we so slow to make a move?
« on: August 18, 2008, 07:30:45 AM »
Was throwing some practice on Sunday morning. Naturally, the lane guy did not put any oil down (I need to speak to the manager about this). Everything I threw ended up on the left side of the head pin. I moved a little to the left, tried throwing it further out (to the right) and twice got the ball so far out it fell into the gutter. Was using highly polished pearl balls, one drilled weak, even, to no avail.

My last shot in the last game, in desperation I moved WAY left and heaved the ball over 17 and out to about 5 and guess what? Perfect flush strke.

Why does it take so long some times to convince oneself that fighting the lane will not work? I could have moved after the third ball of practice but nnooooooo!!!!

Sometimes I hate myself!!!

Exactly.  You can't be afraid to make big moves.  If you have enough confidence in your game and enough knowledge in your equipment, you can make huge adjustments and make it work.  I've had to go from just riding it up the 5 board to moving in and hooking it from 15 to 8 with a different ball in the span of a couple frames some nights.  But it's something that just comes with experience and a knowledge of your game.

I know for me I question myself if it was me or the shot changing. So I tend to be about a shot or two behind the move once I realize then I make a big move.

For me, it's a big question...

Is it me or is it the lanes?

Most times, it takes me way too many frames to figure it out.

Thats my main problem right now.  Sometimes i go high, & i say to myself, "got slow with it", or "revved it up a bit".   The next frame, i throw it well, same result.  If i could just trust that i threw the ball well & the lanes changed, i would be averaging about 10 pins higher right now.

Most bowlers do not know if they threw a good shot or not. Plus they do not follow the ball down the lane.

If you know you threw a good shot and missed the pocket then lane adjustments are in order. But if you doubt yourself you will always wait another couple shots.

If you closely watch the ball down the lane it will generally give you an indication of where the conditioner is. Using the balls reaction you can make adjustments off that.

It is always tough when you have had experience on a condition and expecting it to exist to make large moves off the normal line. Our past experiences bias our mental process.

Read each shot independantly.

I feel the same exact way.  I"m becoming more accustomed to how my gear reacts, and because of that I'm now learning to notice roll out or over-skid, and how to adjust from there.  Hopefully by the end of winter season I'll be able to notice my ball reactions and just move to wherever I need to.

It really comes down to knowing your equipment and knowing/trusting yourself. Sometimes, even if you do throw a bad shot, if you realize HOW you threw it bad, and what the ball did  you can get a measure on what you might need to adjust. It's all a confidence thing. There's really just not too much room for emotion. What you've already thrown is done. Watch it, notice it, learn from it. What happens on the pin deck will happen. Watch it, notice it, learn from it. Once you have released the ball, watch the reaction down the lane, through the pin deck and even how the pins fall. All of that is GREAT knowledge for future shots and you should take advantage of it. It's like religion, once you believe (in this case in yourself) it's always there.
