Grip-loc system--Questions
« on: June 22, 2004, 08:47:30 AM »
I decided to put the new Grip-loc system in my new bowling ball.  Then today I had the sleeve installed in two more balls.  Now, theoretically, you are supposed to be able to move the insert from one ball to another.  So, you have to installed the sleeve and that all.  Here comes the questions:

1.  When I move the insert from the ball, it was originally cut down, to another ball the insert sticks out.  Probably a 1/16 or so about the ball surface, did my driller incorrectly install the sleeve?

NO the pitches are right, it is an even 1/16 all the way around the insert.

2.  Secondly, the sleeve on my Ravage came out Ravage(new ball).  The sleeve apparently slide out during my release and struck the lane causing a chunk to be taken out of my ball.  Who is responsible the Grip-loc people, proshop, who???

When you moved it from one ball to the other the hole in the ball that it doesn't fit in may be a bit smaller....i.e. they didn't bevel it enough or sand it out enough.

Is this the original Grip-Loc inserts as displayed on this site

http://www.griplocproducts.com/

or is it the version that was subsequently offered by Turbo Grips?

If it's the original version, the proprietor has the identity "turnandclick" on this site if you want to try messaging him.  He hasn't posted in ages, so I don't know if he'll get it or not.  One of the two guys who started that company runs the pro shop in the center where my Friday league bowls and bowls in the league himself.

While I have read about these I haven’t seen any installed or used.

My guess would be that the hole on the second ball that was drilled for the outer sleeve was not drilled to exactly the same depth, apparently about 1/16 inches shorter.

Any variation in depth or pitch of the outer sleeve will cause the inner sleeve to fit differently in another ball. Pitch variation will cause either the front/back and/or one of the sides to raise and the other to lower. Any hole depth variances will cause the whole insert to be high or low.

Depending on the quality of the jig used and the skill of the driller it is very difficult to drill two holes on different balls exactly the same pitches and depth. Variances should be small but the human eye is fallible.

I can see where these would be pain for a proshop operator to install.

Question: Is the inner sleeve oval shaped? If it is then the placement of the locking mechanism of the outer sleeve would be important as well. I assume this would be done in relation to the center line but would be tricky to get it the same every time as well.

If is round and you have to use tape to shape the hole, then what is the advantage of the insert over just using tape in the first place?

As far as it coming out, if it was the inner sleeve that came out then it might be your error by not getting the insert to lock into place. If it was the outer sleeve it would generally be the proshop’s error.

If there is no positive lock system on the insert it looks to me that as you release the ball the inner sleeve could rotate with your thumb and come loose.

Although I don't see how the inner sleeve coming loose could damage your ball. The lane maybe, the sleeve yes, but not your ball.

da shiv--yes, it is the "grip-loc brand".  If I can't resolve this with my shop then I will contact grip-loc.  thanks.

Pinbuster-It was the outer sleeve that came loose and damaged the ball.  The insert never came out, it was locked into place.  The entire assembly came loose, both the sleeve and insert.  The insert is round but if your thumb swells up, down or both then this system has advantages.

Thanks for all the input guys.

I would lay the blame on the shop. It clearly states instructions on what an how to install the system. You have to use sandpaper to ruffing up the sleeve to get a good bond, more than likely this is where the fault occurred. They should also use epoxy glue not super glue. I have had a few thumb slugs come loose on me by not ruffing up the outer surface of the slug and keeping it dust free before gluing.

i did try them in my balls

the driller must drill to the exact same depth every time in the balls.

if it sticks out, or isnt flush-he didnt drill the same depth(which is the driller fault

i did this the second ball i drilled-thoguht it was same depth and it wasnt-not a problem now
