Flashing Ball Legal in ABC Competition?
« on: March 21, 2005, 06:34:14 AM »
Hello, I bowl in a league and this guy is using a ball with a flashing light inside of it.  I thought these balls were illegal for use in ABC Competition.  Please let me know.  Thank you!  Joe

The whiskey clear ball has liquid in the bottles in the center.  Shifting weight would be and interested performance factor (no, not in this clear ball, but maybe in an 'absolut' inferno?)

The main reason would be the metal caps I believe.   I find it hard to believe that they actually left the alcohol in the bottles.

I read that the Quasar was banned because you had to put batteries in it and that constituted a moveable weight block.

I don't think the batteries are designed to be removable/replaceable.

Okay perhaps I'm wrong on this one but I say who FREAKING cares. The is a guy throwing a ball with a light in it.. How much of an advantage can he really have? If I got beat by a guy with a light in his ball then I deserve to lose. I'm not saying break all the rules, topside weight or something performance enhancing I could see, but a light in his ball. Do the guy a favor, Don't be a rat and keep you league fun and competitive. Just my 2 cents..

As for some of the other non approving balls, the Reaction Express, Arc Platinum and Power Rock all have the same core, though I don't know anything about it other than it was not released here and is illegal, to my knowledge. The Reaction Express and Arc Platinum use the Mega-Tec coverstock...

Taken from the USBC web site.

Markings

Any bowling ball used in USBC sanctioned
competition must be approved and identifiable as a ball
listed in the “approved bowling ball” list located on the
Specifications and Certifications page on www.bowl.com.
Additionally, for identification purposes, each ball must
have some form of serial number (this may be engraved or
re-engraved by the bowler). Since all bowling balls manufactured
prior to the creation of the ball list (January 1991)
have been previously approved, the acceptance of these
balls is at the discretion of the tournament director and/or
league official.

Material:
1. The ball shall be constructed of solid material ie: no
liquids, and without voids in its interior.

2. Any materials added to or included in the coverstock
shall be equally distributed throughout the entire
coverstock of the ball, except for materials used in
logos and other required markings.
3. The density of any piece/component in a ball (i.e.: core,
coverstock, weight block, etc.) shall not exceed
3.80 g/mL (i.e.: no pure metals or high density materials).
4. Following approval of the ball, the introduction of
substances that are not comparable to the original
material used in manufacturing of a bowling ball is
prohibited. Likewise, altering a bowling ball in any
way so as to increase its weight or cause it to be off
balance outside the specifications is prohibited.
Surface:
The surface of the ball shall be free of all depressions or
grooves of specific pattern, except for holes or indentations
used for gripping the ball, identification lettering and
numbers, and incidental chipping or marking caused by
wear. Engraved pictures are not considered grooves of
specific pattern.

Yet another youngin' chiming in without knowing.

I wont go hard on you because I know you were just trying to participate, but, every bowling ball that is used in sanctioned competition MUST be approved by the ABC. This means honor score or not, none the the games bowled with the ball in question are legal & all scores are to be thrown out.

Beyond the rules, if a guy was using a quasar as a spare ball in my sanctioned fun league, I probably wouldn't bust him out. I would just mention to him quietly that the ball was illegal & if by chance he does shoot an honor score they wouldn't count.

I guess the rules are slightly different between CTF and ABC... thansk for the clear up.
