Why do Pro shops charge so much for inserts?
« on: January 29, 2005, 10:09:26 AM »
We just got a new pro at our 84 lane house.
The manager bragged to me that in his Atlantic City location this guy drill 1600 balls per year. He said his prices would be very competitive.
Not!!!!! Ball drill $40 not bad.
         Inserts    $10 a pair
         Thumb slug $15
Am I off base or is this typical. I but turbo quads or Vise for $1 each. Thumb slugs a whopping $3.
What about the rest of you.
I was totally disappointed. Also he has a teenager doing the measuring.

Mongo. I have and I am a novice.
My point is this was in addition to the drilling price.
I agree $15 to drill out some else's original thumb and slug and redrill it is worth $15.
Did I hit a sore spot. I appreciate a knowledgeable pro my point was this guy was supposedly bragging to the lane manager that he would beat anyone's prices and be better.
I notice you diddn't defend the inserts again if he is redrilling and has to reset pitches I agree but in additioon to the Drill charge on a new ball it's rediculous.
Would you pay the dealer to mount the tags on a new car.

I pay 25 a ball at the once a week shop or 34 a ball at the same or next day shop. I have a friend who is now a mortgage loan officer who works one day a week or if i need faster go with the 34 guys my choice i use a mold cant tell the difference from either ball so its all good. And yes this includes thumb slug and grips vise to be exact.

My question are usually based on a lack of up to date knowledge. I didn't mean to offend anyone but since I am on a very limited budget with 2 young children I try to spend wisely. This is why I buy used equip close to my own span. I can make minor changes with my own drill press.
The reason I asked was I recently got a ball from one of our BR members and it fit more comfortably then anything I have ever had drilled. I wanted to have my three best ball plugged and redrilled but at $60 each I can't. Hence my dilemma.
Thank you all for your replies.

That's a real shame, I go to a pro shop that's personally owned. My driller is very generous being that he's running the shop to stay active during his retirement years, also because he's a good bowler and he can make some cash, and he knows me so I can get some deals . I do complain about the way he drills things up sometimes, he's got the personality that he knows best but I cannot complain with his prices.

Thumb plugged and redrilled: 10$
Replacing my ring finger grip on my spare ball and my Hex:4$
When buying a new ball from him: drills it for free
Drilling up a ball you didn't buy from him:20$, up to 30$ for finger inserts and thumb slug

Sometimes he makes up the price on the spot, it's his shop so he can run it how he wants to. Sorry to hear about your problem, but it's the same way here, he drills them for me but the shop at O' Fallon(50 lane house) thumb slugs are 30, inserts 15 and the rest is higher to. As for the teenager I agree with the others, if he can do the job well then that's all you can ask for.

Those prices are pretty much in line with what I see elsewhere. I charge $30 for a blank drill(usually), and a bit less than he does on grips & slugs. The other pro shop around here is about the same on grips & slugs, not sure what they charge for a blank drill.

I just had my new Thing Lives drilled up a few weeks ago. I'm not sure what the prices break down to individually, but it cost me $55 for drilling(blank), grips, and slug out the door. If you buy the ball from him, he will drill it free but you have to pay $10 for a slug and $8 for grips.

$5 for Grips and $10 for slug and $35 for drilling in one house.
In the other house for a complete drilling it is $5 for grips and $40 for drilling and slug, with slug included in the drilling price.

This is why you have to build a relationship with your pro shop operator. If you are a frequent customer, you will definately get benifits. For example, to drilling here is 40 dollars blank, 12 for grips, 13 for slug, 20 for a full plug, 10 for just thumb, 10 for just fingers, but since I get about 6-10 balls a year drilled up, he gives me a break and charges 30-50 depending on how long i give him to drill and whether he has to plug the ball or not. Everyone around here is about the same, the cheapest I have found is a guy that does grips and slugs for 40, but it seems like the shop is never open when you need it.

let me see here what i got at the pro shop lately, i bought a used rule from him for $50 grips included good deal, hatted the reaction he cut me another deal $20 for a full plug and drill, and when i need something polished or sanded he does it for free, and i ordered an xception and he ended up drilling a rule GP2 some how, so my xception is on the way and im broke so i can't buy another ball at full price so i don't know what he will do with GP2 and a few months ago i got a 3 ball bag and a pair of shoes.

So if your one of his customers that buys alot from him he treats you good,
im so much better buying from him then online for the deals on the little stuff.

I don't mind paying for most of it, but for some reason I just choke on how much it costs for a thumb slug.  Not sure why, I still get embut it kills me.

Yeah, it is kind of annoying when you're like "you have to drill the hole anyways, the solid can't cost more than 5 bucks, it takes you an extra 5 minutes to do compared to a regular hole, and you charge $15?" doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me either.
