why do we need to buy new equipment/???
« on: August 12, 2006, 11:54:42 AM »
I shot 659 Thursday at my summer league, and I have not bought a new ball in 4 years. I had over 10 boards of area to play with 14-15 year old equipment.... No carry issues. It was a Danger Zone 2, bought 5 years ago used for 25 bux shipped....I love this ball so much it is headed back into my bag, and one of my beloved SAWS get to set out this season.

I hear all the time the oil is getting thicker/heavier, The lanes are getting slicker, why is this when I can (and do) go into a bowling alley (any in a 3 county radius) and can play around with one ball, and consistantly shoot duece??

I know about the "HONEY IT ONLY COSTS THIS AMOUNT" or the "HONEY THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER BALL LIKE IT TO ME" or the "HONEY IT ONLY COSTS $10 PLUS SHIPPING" BULLSH!T..........

I dunno about you but my favorite ball, my hex, has finally died. I've had it for 4 years now, put at least 600-700 games on it, and it has just flat out died. Hooks less, deflects more than it ever has, it's just time to go. Bowling balls don't perform forever IMO, so we replace them...

We don't NEED to buy new equipment...but we WANT to....so we do.  End of story

If we like bowling, knowing that when you die you can't take your money with you, why not spend it on something you like to do?  Whatever I'm into...is what I spend money on.....

If you're recreational, then you have a point.

If you try to make money bowling, then fresh equipment is a necessity.

There will be a few balls that will work GREAT from the past. I have a couple of them from the late 90's. They work on the china and the Pba or sport shots too. But they are the exception not the rule

From what I've seen over the years is that the equipment seems to be made cheaper these days.  I mean you always had a ball once in a while from the different companies not work or crack easily, but the equipment seemed to be made better.  You hear about "ball death" way too much these days.  Another aspect is that many of the balls made these days are condition specific where as years ago there was a 1 big ball release every 6 months and there was just a solid and a pearl version.

I see in your file that you own 10 bowling balls not counting the danger zone you talked about so I guess that shoots your theory down the drain. Why do you have 11 balls

VERY well put.

Buzzhead,

Patterns laid out by proprietors are easy and make it easy for a bowler to find and continue getting the ball to the pocket.

Riley, Buzzhead stated he has not bought a new ball in 4 years. He never said he doesn't have older equipment.

I've cut back due to the costs but I try to buy at least 2 balls a year which so far I've done just that.

I've heard for years that the further east you go, the less oil you can expect to find on the lanes, on a regular basis.

I NEVER said I did not own many many balls. I only asked why.....I knew and wanted to see how many people would respond with different answers....

Bruns Nick --- I do agree with you....
But MOST of the statements I have heard over and over again year after year, "the manufacturers of the oil say this is heavier visocity(SP) than the stuff we made 2 years ago" and we as bowlers believe it for the most part. I just got back from open bowling and I wanna tell you I cannot use a medium oil ball anywhere on the lanes....

My Ultra Sonic dove on the headpin time after time....or it rolled out and never hit the pocket....but my D2Z right up ten for a solid duece.....

To avoid taking this topic off on a tangent, I've started a "Part 2" to this subject title.  Now appearing in a forum near you.

I would say the further up north in the east.  Some of the thinnest applications of oil anywhere is in the northern VA, and Southern Jersey area.  One guy I know said it best with:

"The farther up north you go, the further left you'll be"
