The "new" PBA
« on: November 13, 2004, 12:56:17 PM »
I know, I know, wrong forum.  Sue me.  What does everybody think?  I for one am not really into it.  There's only 4 people on the show now, which I think makes it a little boring, and everything seems to be over with and done so quickly, that there's no more excitement, I don't think.  Is it just that I haven't been keeping up with it, or has it really lost some of its lustre?

Gives you the impression that they are trying to leave more time for COMMERCIALS .. then they show the same COMMERCIAL over and OVER again ..

Too much talking, too many interviews, too many commercials, not enough bowling, and the announcers still blow (well Peterson is decent, the minor sports vegabond blows). I usually watch the friggin Lions play over that b/s.

Remember commercials are money in the bank.  Money in the bank is prize funds.
Large prize funds equals more interest.

Remember a couple of years ago when nobody made 200,000 and no 6 was like 65000.
Noboby wants to watch or get involved with a sport where no 10 in the world needs to live with his mother!

Make it a 2 hour show like years ago. Bring it back to 4 matches - even if it means reinstating the wild-card. Lose the lame 10-questions interview. Lose the "make-the-spare/trick-shot" competition. Fill the time with more techno talk (what's in the bag and why). For the money that they're paying, the ball-reps should get a bit of face time. A short "bowling news" segment would be something to bring back. I mean really - does anyone give a rat's behind what these guy's favorite music is, or favorite dinner date, or whatever???? And I don't care who can pick up a 7-10 with 2 balls, or any other bizarre thing. Like that kind of stuff is going to bring "respect" and viewers????

I live about an hour from KC, so I usually have friends over to watch the Chiefs games.  Even as mediocre as they've done this season, I've found that I rarely request to watch a bowler take a shot over flipping back to see a play in the football game, and mostly because you have to wait FOREVER to see any bowling, especially in between games.  I think they're trying to dumb it down to get more people interested, but your average bowler is going to be worse than a scratch bowler.  "Oh, well the pros should strike every ball, so I don't think they're that great."  It's that kind of mentality that's going to disenchant them.  For the rest of us, I don't have to see big scores, I like to see good bowling.  I like being able to tell if it's going to be a strike at the arrows, I just like to watch BOWLING, and as Joe Falco said, avoid those stupid commercials that have now become more frequent.

Right now, all they're showing is that bowlers horse around, eat lots of chicken, and apparently like Nascar, seeing as how Labonte was in that same Banquet commercial that ran about 10 times a show last year.  Do they still have that same commercial this year?  Over the first couple weeks, I doubt I've watched 15 minutes of both shows combined, and ask anybody how into it I was last year.  I'm just not impressed.

Yea, it does suck.

Last year was better.

Who comes up with these stupid ideas. And I thought naming the lane conditions was about as dumb as the pba could do.

Let the Johnson twins put in their joint opinion (my brother is also an accomplished bowler, but he's on the shelf so far this season -- had some knee surgery over the summer).....Bring back the wild card; let's see 4 matches instead of three --- Yeah, I think they're trying to "dumb" it down, as well ---too much fill, not enough bowling.  Yet we acknowledge that commercials pay the bill and increase the prize funds....  Surely there is a happy medium somewhere.

I find it difficult to say, errr... type this, but for the first time since I got back into bowling four years ago, I'm thinking about not watching the show.

Need to practice for tomorrow night's league, and if I wait until the show is over, the sun will be in my eyes for much of the hour-long westward drive.

WRW, Hurd, Walichoke and Kent.  That's about as boring a lineup as anyone could assemble.  And I still have StrikePass, so if I miss anything big, I can watch it over the Net.

Yeah, I think I'll go practice some...

While I applaud the PBA for their attempts, I just do not believe there is a quick fix for the PBA or for bowling in general.  They did a great job last season, but they set themselves up for a less interesting season this year.

The entire sport needs a restructuring, and that means sacrafices need to be made by many to make that happen.  210+ bowlers need to bite the bullet and join scratch leagues that bowl on more competitive oil patterns.  The current 230+ bowlers need to bowl on sport patterns with limited bowling equipment.  These are the sorts of things that can revive competitive bowling.  The stunts they are trying on the tv show now and the new exempt field are unfortunately not the right answers.

Once again it seems the decision makers have looked at the problem from the wrong angle, and have tried to implement a quick fix.

I dont know if I like the 64 exempt concept. I mean it appears we will be seeing the same set of bowlers and I am not sure that the ones not making the show will improve enough to make it against these guys.
And whats up with Pete Weber?

I think the new PBA leadership is trying to do some things and like any change its always hard in the begining. Perhaps they will see that perhaps this is not what the community wants.

The money isnt really better. There are less tournaments same prizefund. There used to be 30-35 tournaments not 20. They have added money to all the majors.
