Why does EVERYONE think........
« on: April 24, 2004, 08:33:17 PM »
That this ball or that ball has great recovery or hold
on a lane? I hear this all the time, or see it in a
reveiw. Push it right, or get it out too far and this ball
will find its way back to the pocket. Tug it or get it inside
your mark and it holds nicely and does not overreact. I just
last week, took 5 balls to play around with open bowling.
They were Pearl Carbide Bomb, Golden Nugget, Pro Purple,
and OLD Danger Zone 2, and my XXXL. I threw each of these balls
on the SAME line, with the SAME release and guess what, they
all hit the pocket, carry was an issue with some, but they all
hit the pocket.

Why is this? Answer. LANE CONDITIONS. NOT the ball.
When are people going to realize this?????????

It is not only the balls but some can be more forgiving then others though. Comparing my polished eliminator to my inferno. If I get the inferno out to the dry too fast it will over react or burn up and won't move at all and if I pull it and get it in a puddle of oil all it will do is slide and hit weak. While if I get my eliminator out too early it usually doesn't over react but and if I pull it and get it in the oil it will hold but still hit and carry. My eliminator makes similar moves on oil and dry making it a good ball for over/under conditions while my inferno snaps a ton on dry and slides forever on oil. Making the eliminator much more forgiving than the inferno.

Buzzhead,

You are correct that lane conditions play a MAJOR role in ball reaction.  What I think is happening is that people are making reference to a specific balls capability of reading and reacting to a given lane condition.

Take your xxxl for example.  It is polyester with a dynamic weightblock.  Even though it flares and will read the lane a bit, it can not read it nearl as strongly as the Pearl Carbide Bomb, Golden Nugget,or Pro Purple would.

On a dry lane, your xxxl will have more "hold" and less hook than any of these other balls. Conversely, the pro purple will have more read and hook on oil than the xxxl.  People are just relaying information the same way they take it in.  They only tell you what they see and many don't understand "why" they see it, only that they do.

Those three balls are capable of reading the lane conditions through much heavier oil than the xxxl is.  Lots of people have the right information, it is just a matter of being able to translate it into words and put it down in a way that most others will "get" it.

Jabs, why is it then why could I throw my XXXL on the same
exact line as my Nugget and get to the pocket. I do agree
that certain balls have more forgiveness than others but
I should not be able to get to the pocket with 5 different
balls in my bag on the same line. No they are not all drilled
the same nor do they have the same surfaces. AND they do not
have the same breakpoint either, but I can still get to the pocket on the
same line with each and every one of them.

Yep I sort of agree with the Eliminator Inferno example above.

I am bowling on a very severe wet dry crown.  Should be easy!

Struggling like hell till I pulled out my weakly drilled Victory SPT(5 1/2 X 6 1/2)(light load particle) the other day versus all my reactive equipment.

This smoothed out the incredible jump and gave me a slight amount of area when I had virtually none!!

It was all of a sudden fun.  Then the shot finally blended out and I could use reactive!

Buzz,

I am agrreing that it is lane conditions that allowed you to do this, but it was the BALLS ability to read them and react to them that made the difference in the carry that you saw between them.

The pro purple was most likely strong and reasonably smooth, striking well when delivered cleanly, while the PCB and the GN were more of a skid/flip type reaction, and finally the xxxl was skid and very little flip probably deflecting a bit when it hit, leaving the ringing 10 or worse.

Yes, lane conditions can make it easier to reach the pocket, but it is contingent on the balls ability to read those said conditions that will make the difference between that needed strike to win and another da*n 10 pin.

Example:  If you had to have a strike to win, and there was carrydown causing the ball to be "iffy", would you throw your pro purple or the xxxl?  Why?
