Why does it take so long?
« on: October 19, 2004, 08:00:14 AM »
Why does bowling league take so long any more?

When I started bowling a 5 person team would bowl 3 games in about 2 ½ hours. If we started at 6PM the next squad was scheduled for 8:30.

Now even with automatic scoring and bowlers throwing twice as many strikes as before it seems to take 2 hr 45 minutes minimum with straggler teams taking 3 hours (and it’s the same teams every week).

There is plenty of time for conversations, be ready when it is you turn.

Lane courtesy (hacks taking 2-3 lanes worth) has contributed as well...

My pet peeve - be up and ready when it's your turn...

I bowled with a team a couple of summers ago that was the worst I've ever seen.
5 man team. I was the only one who stayed down in the settee area. The concourse was 6 steps up (a bit of a hike, in other words). Each team member would wait till the bowler before them was done, and had walked up and sat down before they stood up to make the hike down to bowl. GRRRRRRR....

Then, to take the cake, they couldn't figure out why OUR team was ALWAYS a half an hour later than everyone else!!!!

Needless to say, I have NEVER bowled with them again - and never will. We bowled against a team like that last week - with two people (25% of both teams) absent, we were still one of the last teams finished. GRRRRRR!!!!!!

If you're up, get up and throw!  Your conversation can't be so important that it  just couldn't wait the whole one minute, or less if you strike, to continue.  I really hate that.  If it's my turn, I'm standing in the settee area a few feet back from the approach behind the person I'm following ready to go.  My conversations can wait.  I'm trying to focus and help win games.

For lane courtesy, I use the 'one lane' rule. One on the left, one on the right, no one there, Im going. My team gets done fairly fast now, due to the fact that 1)theres only 3 people, cause out 4th went to adults, and 2) the 3 bowlers that are on the team are...well not like totally serious but not ditzing around. We socialize with each other, but never really leave the bowling area till we're done. We wait maybe a minute or 2 between games to get scores down and such, thats about it.

I bowl in two five man leagues in two different houses. The one without automatic scoring takes us less time to complete than the one with automatic scoring. I have a couple of bowlers on my Monday (automatic scoring house) team who are very slow and methodical when it comes to their pre shot routine, so it takes us usually 2 hours and 45 minutes to complete 3 games. Tonight in my Tuesday league with 10 bowlers we were done in 2 hours and 15 minutes. Our scores are much lower tonight than they are on Monday night, but the bowlers in that league come to bowl, know when it's their turn and go.

I agree Pinbuster: you have plenty of time to converse, it gets annoying to call people when it's their turn to bowl...

the league i bowled in last year was like that everyone wanted 2 lanes on each side for curtesy. My new league is as long as your not standing next to them go bowl and we get done so fast start at 8pm and usually packet up by 10:30 at the lastest usually in the truck by then. what i like it isnt a fast paced thing either. Now my saturday league totaly opposite takes up 3 hours to 3.5 hours to bowl have to chase everyone down. totally sucks.

Sorry if I repeat what anyone said above, haven't read any but the initial post.

Pinbuster, you sound like me.  When I was 22 (36 years ago) I bowled two leagues on Monday night.  Started the first at 6:30, started the second promptly at 9 and had time to run the lane duster in between.  Now we start at 7 and finish more often than not at 9:45 or 10.  The reason?  The bar.  If people arent in there getting a beer then they're in there smoking.  (in the old days everyone had a bottle in their locker so getting a drink took no time at all.)  I cajole not only my teammates but our opponents virtually every week to show up to bowl when it's their turn.  I've even considered changing the team name to "Hey Doug, you're up, get out of the bar."

1. meet the person you follow coming off the approach.
2. you don't have to wait for the little arrow to flash to tell you it's your turn.
3. know what you are going to do before you get on the approach.
4. write the scores down as each bowler finishes their game, don't wait til everyone is done then do it.
5. your leadoff bowler should be the one who can't wait to throw the next ball,..the hyper guy on the team.
6. don't be afraid to nicely ask the other team captain to have his team members up when it's their turn.
7. avoid wasteing time chasing down cards/games/football pools, filling out brackets, and long lines at the snack bar, and bathroom.
8. if you want to watch television or play video games stay home.
9. fix your equipment between shots,..you're not Norm Duke.
Bowlers can have fun, and enjoy the game, it only takes a little preparation, and consideration...je

Yep, that would be me.  Been known to run over the guy coming off the approach.
