Why Does This Always Happen To ME?
« on: December 05, 2003, 05:29:41 AM »
Don’t you just hate it when this happens? I’ve been waiting and waiting and waiting for a chance to throw my Slay/R on some dry lanes. Ever week for the last 6 weeks I keep it in my truck in my ‘disaster bag’ just waiting for the chance to use it. Since the home center has been laying a heavier oil shot this Winter league – I finally decided to bring an arsenal more shaded toward the heavy stuff. Sooo – today – the first day I don’t bring the Slay/R – DRY DRY DRY!!! Tamest thing in the bag is the Monster Red/Black. I’m forced to slide around 35, aiming around 20 at the arrows and out to around 6 or 7 at the breakpoint – with some speed. For this aging tiring stroker, that feels like lofting the gutter caps. Why does this kind of stuff happen? Is it some kind of karmic retribution?

I have the same luck. When i dont have a heavy oil ball, the lanes are oiled highly, when i finnaly get my Flipside Wow, lanes are freakin dry.. Its just our luck i guess.

And another thing, I got a Wild in the begining of Summer, for dry lanes.. Anyways i finally hit really dry lanes and the wild was out of control, that balls hook is underrated.. Even on oil, it reacts great. I think that ball is under rated.

I didn't miss the "Golden Years". I used to take only a Black Hammer, shoes, towel, and some tape. That was my entire freakin Arsenal for 12 years. (And I bowled better then). Before that it was an LT-48 - before that an Automatic Scorer - before that a 3-dot.

My brother's still averaging in the low 200s with his LT-48.  His teammates make fun of his ball choice all the time, but they know he's reliable when it comes to crunch time

IF I was bowling only 1 or 2 leagues in the same house I might suscribe to your theory - HOWEVER - I bowl 1 or 2 scratch tournaments a month in various cities, counties, states, etc., along with my 1 Friday morning scratch league. I see good wood lanes, bad wood lanes, good synthetic, bad synthetic, various house shots, various sport shots, oil types,  etc. It is unrealistic to expect to be competitive with a limited 3 or 4 ball arsenal. Sorry - but it ain't gonna happen. Not in this day and age. If you're bowling on all those conditions, you're going to need at a minimum 7 or 8 balls plus a spare ball. A more complete arsenal would be around 12 balls with a spare ball. If you're going to carry an arsenal to tournaments, you need to use the balls from time to time to stay current with how they stack up against each other on various conditions. As you can tell from my original post, my home center can throw surprises at you from time to time. I always take 5 balls plus a spare ball into the home center for league, and have an 'emergency' 2 ball tote in the truck with a dry ball and a flood ball (since those are rarely needed). Since I have a tourney tomorrow in the home center, I figured I'd leave the 'dry' ball at home and stock up on the more useful stuff just to practice a couple after league and 'fine tune' the arsenal. Soooo, while I too wish we were bowling in simpler times, sadly we are not. If you're gonna play the tournament game and hope to cash from time to time, you need to be prepared.

I could easily average the same or maybe better with a 3 ball Urethane arsenal as you suggest Bones.  However, I'd have to get out of all the pots, tournaments and competitive leagues that I bowl because while 210 or 220 is a swell game with Urethane it won't keep pace with all of the young pups throwing scouts all over the place with their cheater balls.

Unfortunately the game is no longer about having a reaction but rather the best reaction so I must agree with Randy.

And if there is anyone averaging 200 with the Original LT48 not the reactive ball they are a bowling deity in my book.

Yep - When I practice I like to throw a game or three with a rubber or plastic spare ball. You can still shoot 580 to 650 reliably playing out in the track area, and even the occasional big set. I enjoy those games immensely, but you're not going to make much money doing it on a regular basis.
