Best and worst form you've seen on tv
« on: February 07, 2013, 10:47:47 PM »
Earlier, MrNickRo posted the question about the highest rev rate.  So I figured throw a general question out to everyone.

Who do you think has the best and worst forms you have ever seen in the PBA?  This can include past and present players.

Best form: Norm Duke.  PDW and Robert Smith are right up there also.

Worst form: Scott Devers, and more recently Jeff Roche from the Cheetah Championship.

Cracks me up how you people have seen Roche bowl once on tv and criticize that much. He just won the Detroit Masters & is better than 99% of you on here (and way better than me). Typical forums though, lots of hate & jealousy in bowling for some reason

Umm.. No-one here is questioning their skill, whether or not they made the shows, nor how much money they have won. They are good based on those merits alone.

But when you're talking about something like bringing up a youth bowler on what form, least amount of mechanical work on the body, and repetition, form can be very important.

In short, for those noted with poor form on here, their form works for them. Try teaching a junior bowler to use that same form and see what happens.

Then try doing the same thing with form like Ozio, Bohn, and others. Which would be easier for that youth bowler to learn?

back on topic: I'll throw in another one with good form: John Handegard.

Being a lefty I've always looked up to Mike Aulby and thought he had a very sound form and had great timing at the line. So I'll throw his name into the mix. Of course Parker Bohn III, and Richard Wolfe had very textbook approaches as well. On the right side Ozio, Nelson Burton Jr. Dick Weber come to mind as having great form as well.

True, I get it. My bad. I always looked up to Aulby too, being a lefty. My fundamentals are very very bad

Being a lefty, you may want to add Brad Snell to your list. Great 5 step form, and posts the shot like a bloody statue, and was used as the model outside of Aulby and Anthony for the model lefty when I was in youth bowling..

+1 on John Handegaard...no mention of Brian Voss tho. or Nelson Burton Jr.  Look him up in 1984 when he set the scoring record for 4 games on TV..WOW.  I idolized Earl Anthony growing up, but I wouldn't dare try that bent elbow..so PBIII works for me  I thought Steve Cook was really solid too.  As for worst..I certainly won't pass judgement, the worst on TV would destroy my best day.

Suprised no mention of Randy Peterson.
Favorites to watch include Belmo and Osku, Mike Fagen, TJ, Dan Mac.
As for good form, most everyone mentioned in previous posts. Bad form in my opinion is Rosche, WRWJ.
Least favorite to watch: Sean Rash, WRWJ, Mike Haugen, Mike Scroggins, Ronnie Russell

I'm finally watching last week's telecast and I think DJ Archer has to be up there for worst form. Good bowler, but really ugly to watch.

I guess I will show my age by saying Jim Stefanich had the best form I had ever seen. I once saw him throw the front 8 on snot when guys like Salvino couldn't get the ball to wrinkle.

I believe the forms are relative to who is scoring.  I loved the quote in Mark Baker's book.  He called his dad after a few weeks on the tour to ask for some money to keep going.  He said "Man that Earl Anthony is overrated.  He leaves more flat 7s and 5 pins than anybody".  His dad said "That may be true, but in the last 5 weeks, Earl has been on TV 4 times, and you are calling to ask for money."

I could sit and watch Ozio or Voss bowl all day long. They just make it look so freaking easy. I used to be amazed at how smooth Richie Wolfe was for the amount of revs and head belly he created. I mean no jerk whatsoever in his release or follow through.

For some reason it is hard for me to watch Ryan Ciminelli bowl. His follow thru goes by his left ear on one shot and then by his right ear on the next. Plus he looks like he is about to come out of his shoes at the line sometimes. But he has the combo of speed and power that lets him get away with it for right now and has several more PBA titles than I will ever own. :)

Richie Wolfe- one of the good guys.  I still remember when I was a kid and bowled at the youth pro-am at Roseland Bowl in Canandaigua, NY back in the early 90's a few times.  Great form, great to talk to also.

Norm Duke was also great to chat with during those.  I still remember the one morning when he was up in the bleachers they set up drinking his morning coffee and me along with my dad didn't even realize that until we looked off to the one side.  He was definitely cool- took a picture with all of us, signed the book that they handed out to everyone bowling and got to talk all things bowling for a good 45 minutes before we had to get ready for the squads.  Definitely one of the moments that I'll remember for sure.

Voss, Ozio, and Aulby- 3 of the greats, no question.

Harry Sullins on the other hand acted like a jerk to everyone, including myself.
