What is "wrong"?
« on: August 06, 2004, 12:03:10 PM »
[Sawbones]
I always hear people saying things like, "Muscling the ball, is bad." And, "not being square is bad"...Etc etc. What makes these things "bad"? What makes it the wrong thing to do? I mean, all of these things used to be good, and now are bad, why are they bad?? Who made a set of rules that says, "To be a textbook "good" bowler, you must do this, and that, so on etc. etc."? Theres many things that make me think like this. Another one, what make the 1-3 pocket, the right way? Why isnt the 1-2 pocket ever studied for right handers? (all opposite for lefties) Think about it, how many of you have ever thrown that one ball that hits jersey and shatters the pins more then any 1-3 pocket hit all night? Just some food for thought, ya kno.

Kid,

In case there is any doubt left in your mind, Bones' basic bowling philosophy can be summed up, if he will pardon my presumption, in the rather blase platitude:

"KISS"
("Keep It Simple, Smartypants" to be polite.)

Anything extra that you do as part of your delivery, which is not required or an essential, will come back to bite you on the a-s-s one day.

But my reasoning for this, is that you say keep it simple. But what one person finds simple and natural may add more things to remember for someone else. Do you see what Im getting at? Im not trying to argue or prove anyone wrong, just trying to get a clear point of view.

In muscling, how much muscle are you going you use? Can you repeat?

Name one sport where "forcing" (same as muscling) something makes champions. If you are not square (1) the ball will not clear your hip correctly and (2) if you are not facing you target you cannot hit your mark accurately. Watch the professional pool players sometime. Want to learn to bowl. Go to www.morich.net and click on Mo's corner. I talked to a lot of the names in the game at a trade show last week and they said that everyone on the Tour uses these principles. Hope this helps.

The problem in keeping things simple becomes serious when you've been doing something for so many years that, if it is pointed out by a coach or other educated observer, that you are doing something complex, when you should not, it may be very hard to correct. Since you're 16, your musculature is or should be very adaptive. That is, it should be very easy for to correct any unnecessary movements in your delivery.

Even so, I know bowlers in their 40s, who, when coached properly, have made major physical changes in their games to reduce complexity and too much muscling of shoulders and arms.

It should not be a matter of memory, but practice and mental focusing. You have to believe that it is right to make this change and you have to want to change. Then you have to practice it until it becomes normal for you.

There only 3 rules for what is "right" and "wrong".

1  It doesnt hurt you
2  Its legal
3  It works

All the other basic fundamentals revolve around these 3 basic rules.

Whilst that may be taking the "KISS" principle to its most simplistic form, I believe that there are too many people trying to uneccessarily complicate what is in reality a fairly simple process, especially in todays environment

THAT IS WHAT WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT RIGHT THERE! Like, a complex approach, my just be simple to someone else, but trying to do it the "right" way makes it complicated to THEM. I dont really have a problem, I've been changing stuff, it was just a question.
