Why NOW
« on: January 28, 2004, 01:20:59 PM »
Ok so this time next week im hopping on a plane, flying to a different state, and trying out for the national youth team. A big deal for me. I potentially have a GOOD shot of making the team if i perform like i should. So i go out and get some training in today. 3rd game, RIP goes my thumb. Now i realise its a week away, but its going to put a stunt into my preperation. i have league next tuesday that i HAVE to bowl. I know my thumb, once it rips, i have to take time off for it to stop ripping every time i bowl.

So now instead of going down in good form and good health and having a real dash at the team, im going to be going down with no practice, a half ripped thumb that i will not be able to take my mind off cause i know its going to rip. Shall i send the congrats to the team now or later? I havnt given up, i have bowled with ripped thumbs before, but i cant play my A game cause i cant get my release consistent with it.

Ive been working to this since i started back and it was my goal to make it, and its the last year i can qualify for it, and now this. Im SO shattered. The moment i did it, i dropped a big F BOMB, bowled the last 6 frames left handed (i was on 220 pace before this) packed up and came home. WHY NOW?!?!

good luck and high scoring

OK, first off was it just a blister that tore open or was it a Callus that broke open?

Well heres what you do, goto your local pharmacy or walmart or crogers or whatever you have near you and goto the vitamins section and look for some Liquid Vitamin E  get the highest IU count u can find, if you can get the 28,000 IU buy a bottle or two, and put it on your thumb, you dont need a lot, just a light amount and then let it sit for about 30mins to a hour, then apply another small amount and then put a bandaid over it, and take it off the next day.  and repeat over n over for a couple days.

I dont use the Vitamin E as often as i usta, but the stuff does work.  and u can use it on your fingers after bowling if they become dried out n stuff.

But if you do this to your thumb depending on what actually happend? if it was a blister or a callus that tore open, give your thumb two days and it should be fine.

Damn, would have been good to see you there. My girlfriend just cheered me up, she reminded me that at sydney cup (the first tournament after i started back) i came 8th and i had a blister. And at Sharp champ of champs where i came 8th i had a blister, and at redcliffe city open (adult) where i came 10th i had a blister. So not all is lost i guess... only this time i have to come 3rd....

good luck and high scoring

Brenton

Its really strange cause i can go for MONTHS without a blister, and then all of a sudden i have a spurt of them, and then nothing again for months, ill see how it goes, me and my driller have been changing things constantly with pitches and sizes and tape and different types of slugs, it just happens at really weird times lol.

Hey Matt,

If you don't heal in time, I'd go with Bob7's idea in regards to the new skin.  It'll sting if you have an open cut but it can get you through if you really need.  It's slick so it shouldn't cause you any drag...when you get back, feel free to contact me directly regarding possible advice on pitches to help avoid this in the future(been doing this forever, see profile).  Best of luck Matt..

It seems you got it easier. Well somewhat. So you get to just go and tryout for you country's national team? Here, in the states we have the best bowlers come and bowl in the Junior Olympic Gold for berths on the U.S. national team. It is way tougher and on sport, but real fun. I have done okay the past two years in it. Its the same for the adult Team USA. Anyways, good luck bro, let us know how it works out. Oh yeah, and I like your story/book so far.

matt smith -- Use new skin.  Lay down a layer, then while it's still wet, put a thin layer of cotton on top of it.  Then add another layer of new skin, being sure to paste all of the cotton down between the layers.  Then give it 15 minutes to dry and you'll never know you have a sore spot.  Even better than new skin is a material called collodion flexibel (may be misspelled) that you can get at a drug store (they may have to order it for you).  Your dad may have to buy it for you as they may be suspicious of a youngster asking for something like that with a lot of ether in it.  It will come in a bottle - use a Q-tip to apply it just like the new skin.  Good luck  --  JohnP
