Why so many boards?
« on: March 27, 2005, 05:18:59 AM »
Watching most of the videos of people on here I have just one question to ask. Do many of you know how to play down and in? It seems like every video is of people covering 20+ boards. Yeah there are times when it is good to do that but what about when that does not work? Do you know how to adjust and play a tighter line? I see this a lot with the younger local bowlers as well. Is it just because today's equipment allows it to be done easier or why do people think they need to cover so many boards?

I taught myself how to hook coast to coast ands till be smothe with it. I gotta admit, its pretty cool to swing the whole lane and strike. Especially with a crowd of ppl watching.

But, the last few weeks. I have worked on playing down and in. I took the advice of our local alley owner.

My scores have been awesome.   I have not forgot how to swing the ball. But, why  swing with scores like this playing down and in?

If swinging is scoring, then go for it! B/c I would!

At travel league one day the lanes were weird. I was playing a stright ball on one lane and hooking the entire lane on the other.

To sum my opinion up ( my thoughts are very random up there),  Stick to your strengths! But, its good to practice other ways to throw it. Just throw whats best to score that day!

Sawbones and BowlingDude300 I agree with ya both. In using the line that works and what you are comfortable with. But what I am wondering is are the younger bowlers learning how to also play down and in. I like watching players like TJ crank it up but I also like watching someone like Jaros.

I go back to when I was working at a center and I challenged 3 of the better YABA bowlers at the time to play down and in. One of them is one here from time to time (PDiddy). None of them could play that line. They all think/thought the only way to go was the big swing shot.

So is the day of younger kids learning how to play down and in gone due to everyone going coast to coast? Are there younger bowlers out there that do know how to play up the boards at all?

I started oiff learning to play down and in. Then I wanted so badly to hook the crap out of the ball I taught myself with advice froma few ppl off here.

Then my local alley owner, who coaches us a little. He always wants us to play straighter. So, I thought I'd try it one league day for him. Shot 640. I haven't looked back since. Its not much fun when it gets dry when you swing it. All you can do is complain

I'm conivinced that people who still play down and in can hold their own. But, the key to being a good or even great bowler is being versatile.

Edit: Klugh could hold his own if he could hit the pocket He is an extreme down and in bowler with lots of end over end. He can use a full throttle on dry and still carry.

I can play down and in, if I have to, but I am not ver good at it, and I can admit that. I dont like to take hand out of the ball because I am not accurate at all, and without some type of help (more revs), I dont do all that well. I really do need to work on being more accurate. I can however, play down and in fairly well w/ plastic.

sdbowler is correct, when i was in yaba i thought hooking the ball was the thing to do, granted we never got fresh oil, we got what was ever left over from friday nite between the leagues and open bowling.  Now that i have been in adult leagues the last few years i have worked more on the down and in game for the tougher shot when the big hook does not work.  Granted for me it is still a work in progress but it is defiantly a good thing to learn how to do.  Before i started working on it i was very uncomfortable if i stood anywhere farther right than the 15 board because with the way i throw the ball that shot is not needed on the THS.  But i have run into tournament patterns where the down and in game was needed, thats why i am trying to learn how to play that way.  You can't become a one dimensional bowler these days unless you plan on never leaving your bowling center.

Down and in has always been my game- I've learned to play different parts of the lane with a small swing but if I can play up the boards, I do it. Hopefully when I get the chance to get some video work done with my coaching over the next month or so I will put up some video work.

I didn't learn to play coast to coast in the mid to late 70's. My coaches always professed the straighter is greater philosophy- and working more on adjustment of angles, ball speed, hand releases, and a strong spare shooting game.

I agree with BK25 here....if I want to cover less than 10 boards I need to grab my Monster's Inc ball. I used to not be able to hook the ball...now I have a problem keeping it from hooking. The evolution of the equipment and oils have caused a lot of us to develop a swing shot and many times forces us to go big.

Just Saturday night I was forced inside of the 4th arrow in a house known to require an up and in approach or you'll ping the 10. I could not hold a ball right of the headpin until I got left of arrow #4....

Oh well...guess my mission for this summer is to take the hand outta the ball....

Its the macho thing to do, heres an example.

Junior scratch league, we are all above 210 in average. I come out with my saw blade, another kid is throwing a hot rod. He makes some snide remark about how his year old hot rod is hooking more than my saw blade. I think ok, lets just see how the scores turn out, but i don't say anything. As I'm bowling straight up 10 with a slight swing, he's struggling with overeaction playing inside of 15, cranking the heck out of it, throwing it 18 or 19 at the pins. Results- He shoots 840 for 4, I shoot 930 for 4, and damn was I happy that he got to see those scores.

I know they all complain about "how much stanski fluff's the ball and how the hell he gets carry," but hey, the bottom line is the game is to knock down the pins.

My sportshot league has helped me learn to play a down and in shot.  I can do it, and I'm quite comfortable doing it.  I still have trouble playing the gutter though; I usually get afraid of dumping the ball in the gutter and end up pulling it.  I love the THS where I can loop my balls though! ....it's just....FUN to watch a ball cover so many boards!

I prefer down and in, but my league doesn't allow it.  Well, unless I feel like throwing plastic, but even then I can swing it a few boards.  Darn non-oiled lanes.

Do you mean a few boards ?

lol I was thinking the same thing. I can swing a few balls to, gotta be careful though, they're sensitive. If I throw plastic, I usually play straight up 5 cuz I throw it too fast.
