Why throw a 16lb ball?
« on: January 03, 2006, 07:39:19 AM »
Why do people still throw 16lb equipment? I never really understood this one. Any viable arguments for throwing a 16lb ball?

I'm one of the tons of idiots who throws 16 and really shouldn't.  I get much better control and more revs with 14 pound equipment which i'll be switching to in the spring

It's what you're used to and what you've learned to throw?  Exceptionally strong people may muscle or overthrow lighter balls, though for such a person, I fail to see how much difference a single pound would make.

Well myself I never thrown anything but 16lbs. Since I lift alot of weight, even 16lbs is too light. I can control 16lbs no problem. No problem if I do a double header in league. I am 46 years old. It's depend on the individual.

agreed, its all about the bowler. Most people bowling (sorry to say) arent very physically fit like you Melvin, so most cant handle 16 or shouldnt, yet do, and would be better off with a 14 or 15. We never recomend more than 15 to anyone who comes into my shop, no matter age, muscle, or anything. Only whewn someone already throws 16 do we sell a 16. Plain and simple, theres no real reason to stick with 16.

I've been throwing 16 for 3 years now.  I don't muscle the ball or the downswing so I have no problems with over/under hitting or over/under powering the ball.  Just a nice and free muscle-less swing and there's no resistance.  I honestly can't feel the difference between a 15 and 16 after it's drilled and in my hands.

I feel a big difference in 15 and 16 lbs.. I used to work out a lot, and 15 lbs just feels too light.. I have a lot more control using 16.. Heck, 16 feels light..

Used 16 for many years then switched to 15 for approx. 1 year, never got a consistent reaction with it left a lot more 7, 8, and 9 pins and usually threw it past my breakpoint on tournament conditions I can't have that.  Switched back to 16s and I am loving it!

15s tend to go just past my desired breakpoint because I throw them too hard.  Also, I get more revolutions and that makes the ball snap.  I get a smoother arcing reaction without the sharper angle.

I prefer 16 pound balls however I've bought and bowled with some 15 pound bowling balls that were at bargain prices! I use the heavier balls because that's what I've ALWAYS used .. don't believe there's an ADVANTAGE to them!

I find it too funny when people say "XXX amount of weight gives me more control".  You shouldn't be controlling anything in your swing path.  Watch the tour and the tougher condition amatuer tournaments, the guys at the top are the ones with the freest armswings.

there is a difference, take one pound times 17 mph that equates to alot for damage at the end the lane. do the math.

Well, if money is important to you....You can get 16 pound stuff (older or rare) on ebay for a lot cheaper than 15.  I've literally seen a 16 pound sapphire zone go for 33 bucks or so plus shipping, when a 15 pounder at the same time went for over 100.

I can see dropping from 16 to 15, but why would anyone go from 16 down to 14 & just skip 15? Two pounds is a lot!
