Why throw a 16lb ball?
« on: January 03, 2006, 07:39:19 AM »
Why do people still throw 16lb equipment? I never really understood this one. Any viable arguments for throwing a 16lb ball?

I've been throwing 16 since I started bowling, but I just bought my first 15.  I've been having issues with my wrist for the past few months so, I've shortened my span a bit when I bought my Tsunami and since then I bought a used SCB that is 15 to try and see if that helps more.

If you weigh over 200 pounds and are in good phsyical shape, you should be using a 16lb ball.

I throw 16's myself, but from what I've been told,15 lb stuff is supposed to keep pins lower to the deck for more mixing action.
I've thrown 16's all my life.

always thrown 16 ......and I can still throw it through the breakpoint if I get too fast...basically a pretty free armswing, but I can still do it.

It's personal preference.....

When I start getting sore, etc from the 16, I'll drop to 15

I can handle 16lb equipment with out a problem.  I switched to 15lb equipment this season.  I'm glad I switched because I know in the long run it's better choice.  It took a little bit of time to get used to throwing 15lb but I don't see any difference in pin action between the two.

It's not stupid to throw 16lb equipment.  If you can hadle it then I don't see any problem.

If you're going to make statements in an attempt to support your Ron Clifton theory, tell both sides of the story - not many pros use 16 lb. equipment, either.

16lb gives you maximum hitting power.

This is false. With today's technology, "hitting power" and pin carry is basically equal for 15 and 16 pounds. Bowling is not Force equals Mass times acceleration. It's the equlibrium of technique from approach to release combined with ball choice to match the lane. Many slower speed players carry just as well as high rev players.

I've  been throwing 16lb equipment all my life as well. I think everyone is right when there saying it is just personal reference. I throw about 17.8-18mph according to the qubica. I can't imagine what it would be like to go a pound lighter. For me however I just feel comfortable as all of you. I think you don't have to be a muscle bound guy to throw 16. I think you just need to know your limits. If you bowl quite a few games and are looking for more control I would suggest 15 or lighter just so you don't get so tired. But as everyone has said its a comfort issue as well as a personal prefernce.

I follow the tour problaly more and deeper then anyone here and even without looking at evidence there is no pro that uses a 14 pound ball on tour. While there are more that use 15 over 16, it is approximatly 75% to 25% ratio of 15 to 16 lb equipment by the exempt players right now on the exempt tour.

I use 16 pound bowling balls. I tried 15 pound stuff two summers ago when I tried to switch because of a sore back. I tended to overthrow the 15 pound stuff as has been stated already. I would send the ball past the breakpoint. I solved the back problem by adding lower back exersizes to my workouts. Now I have about 5 15 pound balls that get no use. The only condition that I seem to get any benefit from them is on light oil conditions. There the extra speed actually helps. I find that extra polish does the same trick on 16 pound stuff. I have a much looser armswing with 16 pound balls. I can let the ball swing the arm instead of the arm swinging the ball, or something like that.

Didn't Bob Benoit win a tour stop using a 14 pound ball?

Yes but he hasn't toured full time since 1996. Mark Williams also did. Again, that was 10 years ago.

Any viable arguments *against* throwing a 16-pound ball?  None of the ones I've heard hold any water with me.
