Limited tournament practice- what would you do?
« on: February 05, 2004, 09:23:09 AM »
I'm bowling in a 9 game singles/doubles/team oriented tournament in New Hampshire this weekend, and as can be typical of warm ups, on the pair that we will start you are only allowed 2 balls on each lane before scoring starts. I usually try to warm up a game before this practice, but there have been times that the pair that I will get assigned for that practice will not have the oil pattern that is out for the tournament shot.

I guess my question would be- what would be the most effective way to use these 4 shots to read the lanes? Would I be better off using my particle ball to start (assuming we have a fresh oil shot) or should I warm up with my middle ball (El Nino Wrath) to read the lanes?

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

Matt

Great advice, Michael.
That cross lane shot really helps define where the wall might be, or how flat the pattern is.

I would also suggest that waiting is the smartest thing you can do. Watching the other shots - on all the pairs you can see - is really helpful.

And - before you get to the tourney - make sure you know the relative strength of your equipment. For example - on a normal house shot, my deuce is 2 boards different (with my feet) than my inferno...

Also - any thing you know in advance (first hand, not hearsay) about the house is usually helpful - but don't let it overly influence your decisions. FOr example, if you know that House X usually plays outside 7, don't waste 3 warm up shots inside 3rd arrow. However - if house x usually plays outside 7, and you hit the shot well, and it doesn't react as you thought it would, don't waste shots outside 7, when the shot of the day may actually be 4th arrow!

Thanks for the advice guys. A good friend of mine practiced in the house we are bowling the tournament in this week (he's also a lefty) and he told me he had a decent shot outside of first arrow and swinging 12 board to 8 with moderate speed, but to try and avoid inside due to the poorer carry. So I will try the lines he said in warm up, and if it's not working for my game, then I may move inside...

I'll let you know how things go on Monday.

I'm really not trying to be a smart ass, but is 12 to 8 outside the first arrow.

When I think that line I think inside the second arrow(board 10) and then out.

LuckyLefty: When I was regarding what my friend said, those are two different shots. One line he was playing was 5 board and out, another line he said was working was from 12 board to 8 board. I am familar with the inside shot being sometimes 5th or 6th arrow- but they don't throw enough oil on our side to force us inside that far in most New England houses...lol

Day one: I practiced with my El Nino Wrath and noticed two shots- swinging 20 board to 15 board at moderate speed, or throwing on an angle off of 6 board. The first game I tried to play inside with the El Nino, and after one washout and one 4-6-7-8 split, I moved back outside with my Vortex II Particle. Shot 198 that game- then 245 the second game, and I failed to switch balls for game three and shot 166. Had a 609 for the day, the shot really dried up after the second game.

A couple of people shot 710-730, but I saw a tough time with spare making (back ends were flying).

I bowl doubles and singles tomorrow.

first, lets hope you're used to bowling 9 games. this can be physically and mentally challenging in itself. throw  your "medium" ball down the 2nd arrow and watch the balls reaction. adjust accordingly. good luck.

Day two: Bowled at 9am on the pair next to the one we bowled on yesterday. A friend of mine who bowls regularly in the house told me to move inside to 4th arrow and swing out the 3rd. I took out the one ball I didn't touch all day yesterday (Barbed Wire) and noticed it working well. First game I struggled with hitting the head pin, leaving one washout and two 4-6 splits for a 161 game. Games two and three I stuck to the 20-15 line and shot 221 and 247 for a 629 series. We moved back to the same pair I bowled teams on yesterday and had to switch balls to my Vortex II Particle. Shot 184-157-225 and ended up averaging 200 for the 9 games. I'm in good shape to cash with my father in the doubles, as most people struggled on the shot. The first 5 boards on both sides were out of bounds, and the 2nd arrow dried up after the first game. If you couldn't play inside 4th arrow with confidence, you left in a lot of frustration.
