WhyisIT?
« on: May 13, 2009, 05:05:21 PM »
I just joined a league this summer, my first in a year and a half. I've been practicing this winter, with bowling equipment That I thought would help my game! Man, After 2 weeks i feel that I want to quit! I've been bowling for 44 years, and i can't belive that, in all the equipment that I've bought, I'm using some that I've haven't used in 6-8 years! I can't understand that the place were I bowl, Can't put a decent shot out!
I know that some of you, may think That I'm a crybaby, that I need a easier shot, or can't ajust to what out there! It's that they sell or push the high price bowling balls, then put out a dry shot It's not because they don't have the new kegal lane machines to put down a pattern, This is so frustrating to me, That they should sell lower priced bowling balls, and not deceived the public. I think that the usbc should rate the lanes, so every one would know what there getting into!
These lanes just a few years ago used to be the best lanes in town...Not anymore...in my opinion and by the way, they do have oil up front, but there very dry. or squeaky clean in the back! What I think is a good shot, ISn't! Not only i'm I frustrated by the shot for two weeks in a row the right lane has a bit more oil, the left hook more! And let's not forget about some of the pins being offcenter!!!!! I'm just about ready to start using their own plastic balls, and throwing up the middle...  Just call me sandbagger!

Just be glad you didn't get rid of your old stuff. Sometimes that's the best answer for combating todays lane conditions. Some leagues, obviously not house leagues, put a clause in their contract about what shot they want put out. There's all kinds of different lane oils the centers can use so you never know if it's the oil being used or the oil machine itself. These days people really need to do some research before buying a ball.

Yes, less is in many cases more. High end stuff needs some proper oil on the lanes to work, and from my experience mid-range pieces or simply older equipment is more than enough in many houses.

The marketing trap

My guess is that the speed/release you developed back in the day when equipment was weak is too strong for todays cores and high performance coverstocks.  It took me a long time to figure out that less in my release = more consistency, more power, and better results with newer equipment.  Also, if you're like me, the high end hook-monsters will be useless to your game unless you bowl on a 50 foot flood.  Plan on using mid-level performance stuff for your "strong" ball, and low-level performance for your every-day run of the mill shot, and plastic/pearl urethane for the broken down/dry shot.

I have a solid reactive, a pearl low flare reactive, a pearl urethane and a plastic with core (XXXL).  Usually only take 2 to league, alternate the solid/pearl depending on the house, and same with the urethane/plastic.  Usually its the solid with the urethane if the house is more generous with the oil, and the pearl/plastic for the dryer house - or the house that keeps the back ends exceptionally clean.

A lot of houses see less traffic during the summer and put out less oil.  Also, the warmer months thin out the oil just a bit so it evaporates slightly faster and moves around the lane more/faster.  The summer isn't the best time to break out the new Cell, Dimension, Mega Friction, or Maxx Zone.  The pro shops generally only "push" the strong equipment for those that ask for it.  What did you buy and what is still working for you?

I have to second what 9andaWiggle said. I was out of bowling for 25 years and came back in 2002. The only old ball I hadn't given away was a Manhattan rubber ball. I could hook it 8 or 9 boards on the new Synthetic lanes, but with no carry. I told the Pro Shop guy I wanted a ball that could hook. It did, strike, 2-8-10 split, strike, artwork etc. - it hooked the house. Now seven years later I have truly learned that less can be more. I had to relearn release, timing, wrist position, and how I wanted the ball layed out. The shoulder injury that had keep me out of bowling had healed just fine. On the other "foot", both knees had gone bad when I wasn't looking If I had it to do over again.....but that's another thread

I still think that's its so funny, that the new kegal machine they have, can't put down a decent pattern! Just this week I seen a man throwing(HARD) a virtual shift down the dry lane. Man, i think I could sell him the London Bridge...I can't throw my Dark Thunder or dark thunder pearl, and as a matter of fact I can't roll my attitude shift or the t-road solid either I was not blessed with a great hand or speed but, No one should be subject to these conditions!

Sir
Speaking the truth is not being a cry baby.....

Todays owners only care about beer sales....

And yet they wonder why, why so many bowlers have quit the game...

Throwing your shoulder out is no fun....

But since you are probably over 40, the owners don't care about you...

They only care about under 30 hotdogs who drink boo koo beers...

And these people actually think they are bowling on oil....

Just watched Wes bowl last nite on TV....

I don't think he hit the same board twice, yet shot 257...

No, all the owners care about are the under 30 beer drinkers....

sorry,  your screwed

If anyones interested, I'm now rolling A flash point, Eraser, X-factor pro, and a big hit solid. I've also won on e-bay a jolt pearl. Hopefully I can find something that can hit, without losing carry!

Larry Schmittou who owns many bowling centers in Kentucky and Tennessee is this type of proprietor. He told me during the Tennessee State Tournament all he wants are:

1) Children's birthday parties
2) Open bowlers
3) Concessions and beer sales

He hates:

1) League bowlers because they demand too much
2) Tournament bowlers who want guaranteed prize funds

You have some proprietors who care nothing about the game itself. Period.

Can't say I blame him..... Todays league bowlers do complain and demand...
They think this is still the 50's and bowling should be under a dollar....

Yet they want to work for max pay.............

And that is why lane owners love the under 30 crowd...

Most have never heard of Jackie Gleason...And they don't know what a beer frame is.....  To them, every frame is a beer frame....

And when you have kids paying $3 and up to bowl on lanes that need very little oil...  Why bother with league bowlers...

This sport is screwed.....

sir
Take one of your old polished balls and plug it...

Have it drilled to go long and do nothing.... Nothing at "tall"

Put the pin over or under the MF,  and place the MB in or near the track...

good luck...

If that doesn't work... Drink more beers...

Honestly, I find that a lot of equipment is too agressive for a THS.  I have been looking to buy true weak equipment like the Brunswick  Smash Zone, Columbia Jazz or Razyr.  I bout an  Arch rival and drilled it for length.  The first night i threw it without changing the surface.  It hooked wayyyy!! too much.  I polished that sucker down and it works good on a fresh shot.  However I need something a lot weaker for when the lanes dry out.  Try buying weak new equipment.

Sir,   according to Mo,,  1:30 is a time of day....

Now you must talk proper bowling talk....

You meant put the pin 4 1/2" to the pap with a 1" pin buffer....And the MB 6" to the pap...

If they are as dry as you say,  that is still too strong....

Put the pin over or under you MF, MB in track....trust me

WELCOME TO MY WORLD!

Years ago, when balls were weaker and didn't leach the oils off the lanes, I was at the top of the game. Balls and lane conditions really liked what I did and I was very hard to beat. Then came URETHANE.

Five years went by, and I FINALLY got my game adjusted to the more powerful coverstocks. Then, along came CORE DYNAMICS.

A few more years, a few more adjustments to my game, and I started to settle back in, then, along came REACTIVE RESIN.

I have continued to struggle ever since. I still average 210-220, but I have to think my way out of way too manysituations that just don't happen to people with weaker releases and higher speeds. I finally gave in to the fact that there IS no wrong way to throw the ball anymore. Years ago, I had to develop a strong technique to score at an accelerated pace, this is no longer necessary, just drill a ball strong enough to compensate for weaker releases and you canhook it and hit as hard (or harder) than I can.

I'm in the process of changing my game yet again, learning to incorporate more axis tilt into my release to help tame the power of todays equipment and make it more "user friendly" for my speed and rotation. So far, the results are encouraging.

The center owner and I have talked. He told me that he understands, but if he puts out enough conditioner for me, he effectively kills 70%-80% of the other bowlers who have become "strong ball-dry shot" dependent. He also fears that if they can't score and "have fun", that he will lose his leagues and a significant part of his income, and explained to me that he must cater to the masses and that I will have to be the one to adjust my game to accomodate them.

Sadly, sounds like what you will have to do as well.............
