Wichita Lanes-- any info?
« on: January 24, 2004, 08:13:27 PM »
I will be bowling the WIBC this summer at the Thunderbird and Northrock lanes.  Anyone know anything about these houses, especially lane surface?  If they are wood, then I need to travel around a bit these next few months and get on different wood lanes.  Thanks.

Northrock was opened in either 1987 or 88 a 48 lane house Brunswick machines and scorers. Brunswick synthetics on both the approaches and the lanes. Beautiful facility has hosted several PBA stops.  AJ sports bar has some of the best pizza around. The lane beds are getting worn but still playable. There was talk that they are going to replace the lanes for the WIBC but no work has begun yet. WSUCAT bowls regularly there and could tell you more.

Thunderbird is about 40 years old a 40 lane house. They did a complete remodel about 5 years ago new lanes, pinsetters and updated the décor.  AMF synthetics but kept the wood approaches.

Both houses are pretty high scoring during normal league play. Thunderbird host probably the best 3 person scratch league in town.

That's great.  Thanks Pinbuster.  I currently bowl in one Brunswick house that opened up around the same time as Northrock.  My other one has AMF lanes that were redone about 5 years ago when the house had a fire and decided to rebuild and expand.  Each lays down a very different pattern - which is resulting in my 168 average in one house and 172 in the other.  I think if I start varying the times that I go practice to catch the lanes at various states of breakdown (example, Sunday mornings are toast, Monday evening have lots of carry down, etc.) then it should help.  I want to do well.  It will be my first year (only been bowling 2 1/2 years) and lst year I know all my friends finished poorly and most of them are 170-200 average bowlers.

I bowl league on Tuesday night at Northrock and my wife bowls Thursday night.
Latest news is that the lanes will not be replaced in time for WIBC, but the really bad lanes will be repaired.  Since these synthetics are so old, some lane beds look very poor.  The approaches are also synthetic and are sensitive to the weather.  I recommend taking some time to check these out and watch for differences between the middle of the approach and the far outside.  There is a seem where the approaches meet that has been known to be sticky at times.  Get there early enough to get used to the surroundings.  This is a pretty large center and that could play tricks on your depth perception if you are used to a small place.  Food and drink prices will be fairly high at the snack bar, so eat ahead of time or go to AJ's for some pizza.  There is an old fashioned hamburger joint across the street called Jimmy's Diner that has some great malts.

Thunderbird has been remodeled recently and is also a very nice looking facility.  There are a couple tiers of steps for the bowler's area that seem to provide quite a bit of room, but lugging balls down the stairs is a little tricky.  They have the Quibica score monitors that will show ball speed at around 45 feet.  If you haven't seen these before, don't get caught up in watching this too much as you can lose focus on the real task at hand.

Can't speculate on oil pattens, but leagues are just typical house shots.  Northrock is much dryer partly due to the worn lane beds.

Pro shop operator at Northrock is pretty good as well as another center in town called Flight Lanes.  Pinbuster works part-time at Flight, so he can help you out there.

Let me know if you have any specific questions.  Good luck and have fun.
