Here is what works for me, if I am not lost and have a good line to the pocket, usually every pair will play from a simillar break point if you are playing the shot right.
Very few people cross the exact same boards on the way to the break point. That being said you should usually find oil at least for the first few frames to play the exact line you were playing on the previous pair, and then adjust accordingly.
The only time I have found that I have had to make a big move is when I crossed with people playing the exact same line I was playing. The move was to make the next move if the lanes are breaking down with 2 and 1 or 4 and 3 or 5 and 3 or 2 and 2 or some other pattern, and I am crossing with simillar bowlers, then I make the next anticipated move before I throw the first ball, if I am right I still have a shot at 300, if I am wrong, I am still looking at a makeable spare usually and can move back the next shot.
Another problem is when the lanes make a big transition right at the end of the game, I usually go back to where I was before the transition since usually no one else was playing that line, then anticipate the lane transitioning very quickly after that.
I am a tweener, if you are a stroker or rev dominant player, the number of people playing your line will be more than for me. Usually the power players will burn up between the 15 and 20 board and the strokers will burn up between the 5 and 10 board, leaving between 10 and 17 for me, I know that if I move inside of 17 I have to make a big change if there are a high percentage of power players, but you have to watch your ball reaction, just be prepared for a big move. The move I usually make is to move inside with the power players, but play a tighter break point than them with a little more speed, or less speed and wheel on it if I need to match them.
Strokers will need to alter their game usually after moving inside of 13 at the arrows, the move is to either get more side and less speed, or more speed and less side and move back out side.
Power players usually start around 15 on fresh oil and move in quickly to take advantage of the tweeners and strokers opening up the shot, and are always on the lookout for fresh head oil to help get the ball to the break point.
I usually find that I play the lanes simillarly to the ones that do well in the tournament, if it is not me that day (usually isn't since I don't practice like I should).
