Windex is legal as a ball cleaner during competition.  How good it is compared to ball-specific cleaners like Clean & Dull or Energizer, I don't know.  The usual poor-man's solution is Simple Green, alcohol, and water in various combinations.

Just to add my 2 cents.

A pro at my bowling lane uses the Simple Green, alcohol and water combination in 1/3 ratios in a spray bottle. He suggested to me to use that.

I also spoke with another league bowler at the same lane who uses pure rubbing alcohol to clean his balls. Apparently, rubbing alcohol doesn't adversely impact upon bowling balls.

I've been using Ebonite Engerizer on my balls. The only problem I have with the Ebonite cleaner is that it doesn't clean track marks very well.

in my experience with people that use the rubbing alcohol are their always coming into the shop complaining that their ball doesnt react the same anymore and they havent had it long. I can pick the ball up and feel the oil build up on it. I ask them if their cleaning their ball and 9 out of 10 times they say rubbing alcohol. I dont use it and I dont recommend using it, but thats just me.

I have just the opposite experience with rubbing alcohol. Everything that I use it on keeps the same reaction and I've been using it for 3 years. I use the 90%, so maybe these people that come into your shop are using the 70%. Other people that I bowl with use it also and they have had the same experience as me.

To the OP: In my experience, Windex will remove the dirt and grime, but not the oil. Since the active ingredient in window cleaner is ammonia, it usually winds up being cheaper to just by ammonia. Careful with the fumes - they're pretty rough. Personally, I use a 1:1:1 mixture of Simple Green (to degrease), ammonia (basic cleaner), and rubbing alcohol. After that, I use soapy-water that I keep in a spray bottle to clean off the film that Simple Green can leave on the ball. Every four to six months, I do the hot water treatment and touch up the surface.

Here's a link to the approved cleaner list:

I also used the 90 percent stuff potent stuff and cheap, the balls never lost reaction or became oil soaked. That was back in the days i had maybe 4-5 bowling balls, the best cleaner i think is the legends ball cleaner hands down.

DO NOT USE RUBBING ALCOHOL! Buy Ebonite Powerhouse Energizer Cleaner, it works great.
