Title: Winter in full effect, bowling balls & cold temps
Post by: JPbowling151 on November 25, 2014, 04:23:37 PM
With the winter upon us it brings up the question of bowlers who leave their bowling balls in their trunk rather than dragging them on the train and to the office, myself included. We can all agree that leaving your bowling equipment in your car trunk during the winter months is bad and can lead to the shell cracking or the core separating. While seeing the shell cracked is pretty straightforward, how would one know if their bowling ball suffered a core separation? Are the signs obvious, if so what would they be?

Thanks!!

I think it was if you throw it and failed to see any reaction on the ball, but the surface is fine, you pull some water into the thumbhole or fingers and see if the water gets transferred into the other holes. So if you put water in the thumbhole and water was also being filled into the finger holes without you doing intentionally, then theres a core separation... i think

If you wear a ring you can tap on the ball with it. If the sound changes as you tap on the ball you have separation. But you have to tap in more than one place on the ball.

As bass said, sound will be the biggest indicator of whether a core has broken or separated.

I had a ball that had a broken core (Original X-caliber) that the core broke in. Whenever it came back on the ball return or another ball hit it there would be a hollow clacking sound that is unmistakable.

The ball reacted fine and I shot 3 honor scores with the ball after the core broke.

Cold bowling balls hook less. Seperated cores will have a different sound when hitting the pins sometimes. We would just drop it a short distance onto the floor and if sounds less solid and more like a cracked pin in the rack.

Do they hook less until they warm up?

I used to throw on old heavy blanket over my bowling bags when left in the car. It seemed to help keep them warm.

Down here in Florida, bowlers don't need to be concerned about such cold-weather situations as pertaining to bowling.

Uh......a blanket works by retaining the heat a warm body emits.

I've heard of folks using hand warmers in conjunction with blankets. Or tossed into the shoes of a single ball bag where they sit under the ball. Never tried if myself. Might someday with a junk ball just to see.

I rent a locker(s) at the center, nice and warm.
