Women and lane conditions
« on: April 20, 2004, 04:39:31 PM »
*WARNING THIS IS AN ARSENAL QUESTION*

Okay, my wife has the following equipment:

Hammer Vicious Particle(low load)-1000 grit sanded
Brunswick Smash/r-light polish
Brunswick DZ-old, third drill, extremely shiny

I believe that women face different lane conditions in tournies than men do.  Typically, women run into carrydown far more than men do.  This is mainly due to some women throwing plastic up the middle.  So, I want to get Mrs. FUFU a new ball.  I will more than likely get rid of the DZ because the Smash/r and DZ are so close(given same surface prep).  I was thinking either a reactive pearl (inferno possibly) or another solid reactive.  She plays up 10 with good speed and revs especially for a woman, no offense michelle.  Does anyone have any thoughts on a good pick.

Im not much of a Brunswick guy but, if you wanna stay with Brunswick I would polish the hell out of the SmashR, move it down to the 3rd spot, and get her an Ultimate Inferno.  Ive seen many people throw this ball, all types of styles, releases and speeds and this ball is a bomb.  Like you said, with only having a 3 ball arsenal, you dont want anything to overlap.  You could go with a Blazing Inferno, but probably too close to the Smash R.  Stick with something solid reactive, and I think that will work.  You can always change the surface to suit her game.  Like I said, I was down in Vegas for the MegaBucks in Feb and ALOT of people were throwing the Ultimate and scoring REALLY well.  Looks like Brunswicks best ball in a long time.  Hope this helps.

Andrew -- We need to know what weight ball she throws.  If it's less than 14 lb, most manufacturers change the core.  --  JohnP

Does she limit herself to playing up 10 or does she have multiple releases that can be used in tournament settings?

And what sort of tournament environments is she competing in where she is seeing more plastic being tossed than anything else?  Even at City and State when I bowled them in years past (before they ceased to be scratch events) I saw very little of the "plastic up the gut."  Rather, the opposite problem was often seen where the heads were burned from too strong of a ball being used by the majority of the field.

LOL Brian - you got it right the first time.

Seriously - this kind of question is the type that you guys can't answer.

Michelle, I run into the "plastic up the middle" in city, state, and WIBC tournaments. It is one of those lane conditions I fear most - because it's completely unreadable. In fact, just before I left for WIBC last year, a local touring pro told me to pray that I didn't follow that kind of bowler in any event at the stadium.

My strategy on this type of condition is to pull out the most aggressive thing I can find, use an aggressive release, and get in deeper than most women.
I have no idea if this is a line your wife might find comfortable, but I like it.

Here's my overall game strategy - when I'm playing with the guys, I tend to stay outside most of them. When I'm playing with the women, I get inside most of them. That way there are fewer folks messing with my shot. Of course, I don't really care if I have to play 4th arrow or 1st...Whatever gets the job done. Outside those boundaries is a bit tough for me.

Oh, when I saw the title, I thought it was some pyschotic rant about how women ruin lane conditions...

Guess it wasn't.

JohnP--She throws 14lb, so a core change isn't a problem.

She wears a mongoose which doesn't permit many changes in releases.  She is fairly accurate.  We just had a kid, so I am hoping this will get her back in the mood to bowl.

BrianN--LMAO!
