Should I purchase a ball spinner?
« on: July 31, 2009, 01:51:33 PM »
Hello, I have 4 balls in my bag(Storm VE, FAST, Ebonite Tornado, Brunswick Swarm). I am trying to become a serious bowler. I bowl 2 to 3 times a week. I just started bowling a couple of months ago. So far, my highest score is 214. Every time i'm done with bowling, I clean and polish my bowling balls. I'm thinking about purchasing this ball spinner to help clean and polish my balls(http://www.bowlingball.com/vertex-mold-ball-spinner-1-3-horse-power-bowling-accessory.html). What I want to ask everyone is, does every serious bowler need a ball spinner? Should I purchase one? Thank you so much for your time.

Most serious bowlers dont have their own spinners.  I would say most serious bowlers don't even maintain their equipment very well.  They probably have bought another new ball before surfacing their present ones.

I would probably tell you to make friends with your pro shop guy, get him to teach you about different surfaces and how to get them.  Tip him a few bucks, and after a little bit, he may let you spin for free.  A year or so from now, if you are still serious, then get you a spinner, and you also will know better how to use it.

Sound advise! And that's the way I've done it.

Worked in a shop, let the proshop guy teach me the trade, helped out when it was busy, cleaned a couple bowling balls for him. Before long he let me use the spinner.

I will respectfully disagree here. Quite a few SERIOUS bowlers that I know own a ball spinner and ably adjust, clean and alter surfaces.

However, MOST bowlers do not own a spinner and their maintenance is non-existent.

At your current level and commitment...let your pro shop handle it.

if you own more than five balls and plan on buying a sixth and beyond just dont buy another ball till you buy a spinner. there one of the best investment a bowler can make.

I agree, get a spinner and try tweaking the surfaces on your current balls. Don't get a new ball until you see how much surface tweaks change your current line up. Good Luck!

I honostly would wait. The serious bowlers I know don't even own a spinner. Most of them are in good with pro shops in their area to where they can go in and the pro shop guy will either do the work for them or they use the shops spinner. That's after the shop guy has worked with them to show the proper way on how to use it.
I am surprised nobody has asked this yet. WHy are you polishing after every time you are done? I can understand cleaning but polishing after every use?

I know a pro shop owner who never cleans his stuff, why.because he gets new FREE equipment all the time.I on the other hand can't afford to buy more then two new balls a year and usually only pick one new ball a season.if it wasn't for my spinner that I've owned for many years now I don't know what I'd do.
I keep all of my equipment clean, adjust covers and keep them working top notch with my spinner.I also buy or trade used equipment and find the used stuff that is supposed to be in excellent condition is not IMO.
after many years of using my spinner I also understand the importance of cover adjustments and figuring out what you like best about the core/cover match up,takes some experimenting that would be difficult to do with out a personal spinner.

The answer depends on whether you have extra $$$ or are trying to get the most improvement for your dollars spent.  If you're rolling in bucks, buy a spinner and two or three new balls to go with it.  On the other hand, if you want to get the most improvement for limited funds, forget the spinner for now and invest your money in lessons from a good coach and practice.  You can do a good job cleaning your equipment by hand.  Sure it takes a little longer and is more work, but not enough to really justify buying a spinner.  Polishing is best done on a spinner but only needs to be done every 50 games or so.  Your pro shop will probably charge $5 or less per ball.  --  JohnP

I for one am in the category that I cannot afford a ball spinner but would love to have one.I religiously clean my balls after every set and I buy my own abralon pads and adjust the surface myself as needed. All my friends have come to me to have their surfaces altered as well with very good results.Technically you really don't need a ball spinner if the money isn't there but it would be nice to have.I have always had great results by hand.Takes a bit of hard work and elbow grease but it's worth it in the long run.If you are like me and can only afford maybe one or two bowling balls a year(and mainly used stuff at that)then go for it.Take care and best of luck.

I personally would rather purchase a spinner rather than a new ball. I could not imagine not having one. I do buy one new ball every other year, but maintain the older equipment on a regular basis, and the reaction is nearly as good when I first purchased them. As far as the coaching being mentioned earlier I also totally agree.

1.  If your high game is 214, in all seriousness, stop buying balls and start buying lessons. You don't become a serious or a good bowler overnight. Right now, I'd say you need 2 balls, a solid and a pearl and maybe one polyester spare ball, but you need a coach more than anything esle.

2. Clean all your balls after each use. DO NOT polish your balls after each use. You're adding skid and flip every time you polish a ball. YOu're basically changing th esurface every time you do that. Balls only need polishing every 20 - 50 games, depending on the lane surface and your rev rate, that is, how fast they lose their shine.

Once you're averaging 190 - 200 then worry about a ball spinner. and Yes, many serious bowlers do own one. They're not that expensive any more, and they do help with maintenance and changing surfaces, as needed. You do need to learn how to use one before you get one. SO making friends with your local driller/pro shop is also a good idea.
