Worried About Ball Weight Change
« on: June 17, 2003, 02:58:47 AM »
After a few years of playing with 14lb equipment, I have finally summoned up the courage and decided to go back to 15lb. I just wondered if anyone else had gone back up in weight and if they noticed any big differences? I guess I just want to know if there will be any noticable differences (apart from, I hope, more carry!)

Reality Is.......Working out how to carry the 10, only to start leaving the 7.

I am in the midst of transtioning from 15 lb to 16 lbs and right now use both 15 and 16 lb equipment. The only precaution I take is to use my Mongoose "wrist device" all the time to prevent any stress to my hand, wrist and fingers (mostly tendons), only because I am so used to 15 lb balls. The device tends to make my release more consistent and the heavier balls tend to promote a free arm swing (which may be only my problem, as no one else has mentioned this advantage/side effect). I used to have an inconsistent tendency to "rip the cover off the ball"; I find the heavier ball helps prevent from doing this, which I see as another advantage.

May I suggest you try 2 test balls: a medium pearl and a medium strong solid as a test gauge for whether you'd be happy AND comfortable doing this. This Summer is an excellent time to experiment. Keep your 14 lb spare ball.

I'm using the summer to make the transition from 16# to 15#.  I have a nearly new arsenal and I plan to add 2 more to it if I go to Reno next year.

I'm having to re-learn how to bowl with my new 15-pounders.  I keep wanting to throw them just like my 16s and I'm getting horrible results.  I'm playing around with changing my approach since that's where my ball speed is generated from.  I'm still getting the same revs and ball movement out of the 15s.  I've had some luck with what I've tried, and now I just have to fine-tune the rest so I can do just as well this fall as I did last fall.  I threw a 651 last night with my new Mutant (kudos to Track for a great ball), but I also had a LOT of mechanics problems I was trying to work through.  It's drilled to be my heavy-oil ball, and it should've hooked like a banshee last night, but I could barely get it back to the pocket with all of my mechanics problems.

Transitioning will take time depending on your level and what you're transitioning to.  You might see lower scores for awhile, but they'll go right back up when you get used to throwing the new stuff.  Who knows, maybe you'll be much better now than before you dropped to 14#.

On league night, a realm of untold destruction and horror is formed.  Innocent pins are unsuspectingly pulled into this terrifying realm.  Their lives are changed forever by the terror that is unleashed upon them for the next 36 frames.  They stand in fear as they await their fate when they enter...The Danger Zone.  (Only those damn 10-pins have lived to tell the gruesome tale.)
