Worst Leave on a Pocket Hit
« on: April 22, 2004, 06:50:06 PM »
I had an experience a couple nights ago that totally blew me away!  After league, I decided to throw a few shots with a new ball I just recently drilled up.  It was an Apex Obsession drilled to roll early.  It was second shift oil and I knew this ball was fairly strong, so I threw a shot fairly deep on the lane (or course knowing that the ball was made to arc and was drilled to arc.. so playing inside with it on drier lanes probably wasn't the best line... but I just wanted to see how it rolled).  Hit 20 at the arrows, and wanted to swing it out to about 13 at the break point.  Didn't happen... the ball revved up very early... but surprisingly smooth.  It read the mids amazing... nice controlled breakpoint, but only made it out to about 15.  After the break point, it started home and went absolutely flat!  The ball didn't roll out, but definitely "hooked out".  It hit the pocket flush (but had no angle) and left a stone 4, 5, 7.  I had left (or seen) one of those before!  I wanted to see if it was a fluke leave, so I threw about 5 or 6 more shots afterwards... carried most of them.  Ths has to be my worst leave on a pocket hit (even though it had no angle and little drive).. what is yours???

4-5-7-10, playing straight up the 12 board.  The ball was very obviously DOA when it hit the pocket.

6,7,10 (twice in a row)
Ball came in really sharply of the outside dry boards and slide the 6 over about an inch and drove the rest of the pins right around the corners.

Come on folks, pocket 7-10s, 6-7-10, 4-6-7-10, 4-9, 4-7-9 etc are all common leaves whether your in the pocket or not.  I've lost count of the number of times I've left those on what appear to be good pocket hits.

Now things like the 4-5-7-10, those are the unusual not to be left often splits.  And then there's the 3-4-6-7-9-10  through the nose "designer split".

On edit:

I forgot abut the numerous "pocket" 7-9s I've left. (I'm Right Handed)

Hank: It doesn't sound so strange as I've hit flush (I'm a lefty) and left a pocket 4-10. That can happen when the back ends are flying...

Extremely frustrating... I left the 8-10 on a pocket shot last night in the 10th frame going for my first 700 on the last night of leagues.  I was throwing a good bomb, had only missed 1 spare up until that point.  248, 221 (missed 10 pin) and the started with the front 4.  High hit, 4pin spared.  Strike, then bad shot, 3-6.  Covered that, next shot flat 10.  Covered the flat 10 and struck in the 9th for a great setup.  First ball in the 10th, good shot off the hand, and goes right in the pocket leaving the dang 8-10.  216, 684 set.
Sadly, this is the SECOND time this very split cost me a 700.  Kinda telling, huh?

The only pocket splits I've left have been the 7-9 and 7-10, and a lot of the 7-10's are from late, steep angles.  I've left 6-7's on light hits, 4-9's on high hits, etc., but I wouldn't call them pocket splits.  I usually laugh when someone says they left a pocket 4-6 or other nonsense.

A couple of weeks ago I went a little heavy (thinking that I would leave a 4 or 9) and left a 7-9-10.  It looked like one pin went right over the 7 and one wrapped right around the 10.  Wierd.

I left a 4-6-9(right-hander) that was, at worst, just a little worse than high flush.  Not sure if there were some pins off spot, the shot was higher than I thought, or a combination of both.

I leave "pocket" 7-10's pretty often due to generating a lot of entry angle.  I put the pocket in quotes, because while the shot may look perfect to others watching, I usually know it's coming before the ball ever gets there.  It's almost always a shot that goes a little long and comes in just a tad late.

Dead flush 7-10.
Followed by the high flush 7-9.
GRRRR...

Forgive me - this isn't personal, but...gusmand...
If you left 2 flat tens in a row, why were you surprised that you left an 8-10 - flat ten is a weak shot - 8-10 just a bit weaker.

One time, back in my junior days, I was playing a light pocket and left a 5-7-10.  I felt pretty useless until I saw two other guys that day hit the pocket and leave the same split....

I have left a 8-9-10 last night and i have left two 8-10's back to back and the next two frames were 7-10's dead flush.
