Would changing ball weight help release???
« on: May 26, 2010, 10:23:40 PM »
I have been having a problem with my release and I was wondering if I went down in weight would it help correct the problem? I throw 15# now. And going to 14# would I notice a difference in hitting power?

14lb stuff by the numbers are usually stronger.  I would say you wouldn't notice a difference in hitting power.  However, your question about going to a lighter weight due to having a problem with your release can actually magnify your problem and make it worse instead of helping.  I would suggest to seek out a Silver or Gold level coach first.

It depends very much on what the problem is with your release.

You would notice a difference in hitting power. That's just physics...Carry will not be much difference and in some cases better.

I would look at the fit of the ball before changing anything.

The problem I am having is that my thumb exits the ball almost the same time as my fingers. I am not sure if I have always had this problem or not. I went and got videotaped for revs and speed and that is when we found out I was doing that.

I was thinking about going down in weight also because I have been getting into bowling more tourneys and stuff and with bowling more and more games I have been getting some shoulder pain and just get tired really quick.

Depending on what kind of problem your having in your relese it may or may not help.  Send me some more info on your problem and we will see what a good choice may be.  As fas as hitting powercarry goes, the problem that happens when someone goes from 15 to 14 is they start throwing it harded.  Keeping the same speed can actually increase carry by being able to have a stronger wrist at release.  Sure if you take a 15 and a 14, throw them with the exact same speed, revs, axis tilt, axis rotation, the nine yards you will notice a slight difference which will probably be a 10 pin.

i can't comment on how it will affect your release revs wise but i dropped to 14lb this summer and have found very little difference in carry. i am a low rev player who has quite a bit of a problem staying behind ball. it has helped me work on staying behind ball longer and avoiding some of the "topping" i am prone to.

presumably if your fingers and thumb are exiting at the same time, your wrist isn't straight at release. In that case, going down a weight might enable you to keep a better wrist position, maintaining the fingers under the ball.

If you ask me, the shoulder pain and tiredness are more than enough reason to drop a weight. The additional possibility that your release might improve is just an added bonus.

Are your finger grips too big? I have thrown every grip combo out there, sarge easter, grips, no grips, vacu, and about 5 different grip styles. I currently throw a 16lb. ball with no inserts and i have about 7 pieces of tape in my thumb to make it snug. Fingers are still snug and come out after my thumb. Maybe try thinking about letting go with your thumb sooner to try to fix it. Or a coach would always be good too. And it does sound like you could be spinning your hand on top of the ball. Slow down and work on a nice easy swing in some practice to see if you can work it out. Heck, sometimes i toss a ball on the carpet on home just to get a feel for what i am thinking of doing.... Good luck!

Thanks everyone for the advice. I have talked to a coach and he told me to take a nerf football and work on my release that way. And I have gotten some good advice here and I will try it the next time I bowl and see how that works.
