Would this be illegal? Drilling subject . .
« on: July 17, 2003, 12:04:36 PM »
I have an idea it would be, but while I know there can be no more than one balance hole anywhere on the ball, could that one hole be drilled with two different pitches?  Say you drill the hole on the pap.  Orientation of the fingers is to the left of the hole.  Could you drill into the hole with 1/2 left pitch only, and then in the same hole drill back down with 1/2 reverse pitch only?  While I'm not a certified driller, so to speak, I think I'm pretty good and have most of the knowledge down.  Also, what does anyone think about maybe a half inch or more bridge?  Wouldn't spreading the fingers a little give you more control?

Bullred has drilled thumb holes like that.  Guess it would be legal as long as the ending weights were in spec.

Problem I see with the wider bridge is you would have to shorten the span, probably have to change pitches.  Also too wide of a bridge will probably put pressure on the sides of the fingers instead of the pads.

What purpose is the double drilling of the balance hole supposed to serve.

Actually, only ONE balance hole is allowed.....the 12th hole is a "mill hole" which is often drilled above the finger bridge, to help check the hardness of the coverstock.  You can put the balance hole most anywhere on the ball you want, but you are only allowed 1 balance hole.  As for having mulitple pitches in the balance hole, I'm not sure...but I think (again, not sure) that you can have multiple pitches in the balance hole, as long as the diameter of the hole does not exceed 1 1/4" in diameter.

I just submitted this question to the ABC rules committee through bowl.com.  I am very interested in the answer, because my brother has a ball with a balance hole drilled in this fashion.  I'll post the response when I get it.

That's kinda what I thought.  The reason I ask is for the Bonanza balls, or seconds with like 7 inch pins.  The boss drilled one for himself, and put a ton of pitch in the balance hole so he could put it closer to where he wanted it.
