Exercise in futility
« on: September 07, 2004, 10:46:26 PM »
I ran my proposal by one of the alley owners.  He explained the facts of life to me about bowling.

First of all I didn’t take into account that a sandbagger isn’t concerned about winning or losing in league.  He simply bowl league to establish an average for tournaments.

Second, the majority of the league secretaries don’t figure in the roll offs scores at the end of the year.  They submit ending averages from the scheduled league games.  Baggers know this.

Third, most tournament directors don’t submit the games and scores to ABC at the end of their tournament, even though they are sanctioned.  Baggers are also aware of this.

Same with reporting tournament winnings.  Unless someone was at the tournament with him, no one knows.

Just as in everything in life the cheaters are always at least one step ahead of the authorities. The drug smugglers can always get around the DEA, athletes will use new doping methods, taxpayers will cheat and find loopholes, and sandbaggers will exist as long as it is profitable.

The best you can do is to make it as tough as you can.

The penalty isn’t high enough for the ones being caught. I opt for vigilante justice, take them out and hang’m from the marquee .

This may be a dead horse, but I would be curious to hear of any solutions that worked or would work to end bagging.  All I could think of is making everything scratch, but then only the best bowlers win money. (which is fine for me, since I believe only the best should win, but not fine for Joe B. who is happy at 140)

I like the idea of your average never moving up or down 5 pins between seasons.

Seems to me with the majority of todays bowling centers having computerized scoring, it would not be too difficult to create software that would download all scores from each league right after the league was bowled to an ABC database where they could be stored.  We all have a member #, so why not track it through there?  Tournaments would download the same way, but maybe to a separate database with a link to the league avg. for each bowler.  This way it would be easy for ABC to pull up a bowler and see their league vs. tournament average.  Also, you could "red flag" any bowler easily.  Anyone who shoots "x" number of pins over average in a tourney gets flagged to catch ABC's attention so they can check and see if a pattern develops.  They could also see who is winning $ in handicapped tournaments and consider re-rating them for future tourneys.  Another benefit, since most tournaments ask everyone to reserve their spot, the tourney director could easily input the players, check their averages, and see if any red flags come up that might require re-rating the bowler for this particular tournament.  It might cost a little bit to get it up and running, but isn't that what our membership $ should be for?

Sir K .. you were looking for suggestions to offer the USBC to stop BAGGING. Why not ask them to carry a TOURNAMENT RECORD for each registered bowler. It can be recorded in the YEARLY BOOK. Allow for 20 entries on each bowler that will record for the tournament: AVERAGE/FINISH POSITION and AMOUNT EARNED! Each SANCTIONED TOURNAMENT would have the TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR responsible to report. If that doesn't stop BAGGING .. nothing will!
