HELP!
« on: December 31, 2004, 12:22:51 AM »
Dumb Question, but what is the difference between a thumb slug and a thumb insert? Also, if I get one p ut into an existing thumb hole, will my span be affected, or will I have to plug any holes.

Im also curious of this myself. I do know that your span could be affected, or may not be depending on how they do it. To fit a slug in, they have to drill your thumbhole way bigger (unless you have an un-naturally large thumb). Doing this makes your span just a wee bit shorter, then putting the slug in, you can drill where ever needed to make the span right again. Thumb slugs are great. Also a lot easier to mess around with pitches and such, since you can just drill the slug out, and put a new one instead of plugging and redrilling the ball.

Thumb slug is solid when in serted and a thumb hole is drilled into it.

Thumb insert (sometimes confused with thumb slug) is actually a predrilled (and usually ovally shapped) insert (like finger inserts).

Both are glued into place. And care should be given by the ball driller to not effect the span when inserting.

Ok thanks, because I want to get an insert in each of my balls but cant pay to have a nd plugged. I was thinking of getting a molded insert so they can just change the pitches easier.

Stjosephkid -- If you want to be able to change pitches, you want to use a slug, not a sleeve (the proper name).  With a sleeve, the pitch comes from the drilling of the hole the sleeve fits in.  It's easy to change the size of the sleeve, but not the pitch.  With a slug, the driller sets the pitch when he drills the hole into the slug.  To change the pitch, he will drill out and replace the slug, then redrill the hole.  --  JohnP
